Martina Navratilova cemented her place in the history books with numerous accolades during her playing days. However, even during her peak, she wasn't afraid to ruffle some feathers and speak up for what she believed in. Her decision to come out of the closet back in the 1980s and at the top of her game was certainly a brave choice.
Navratilova has since turned her attention to commentating, both on tennis and on social matters since she retired. Given the current political landscape in the US, and all over the world, there's plenty to talk about.
The former World No. 1 has been quite outspoken about President-elect Donald Trump and his policies since the election results last month. On that note, here are five instances when she criticized Trump since he won the presidential election in November:
#5 - Martina Navratilova posted an alarming message in light of Donald Trump's victory on election night
The bitter presidential election battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump came to a head on November 5. The latter beat the former to secure his second term as the President of the United States, having previously led the country from 2016 to 2020.
Navratilova was firmly in Harris' corner and was rooting for the Democrats to pull through. However, when that didn't happen, she posted a message on social media as to why Trump was able to secure the win.
"Well, Trump won. Fear and anger won. And a country that was born as a racist patriarchy proved beyond any reasonable doubt it still is a racist patriarchy. Not sure when this ceases to be true," Martina Navratilova wrote.
Navratilova has been extremely critical of Trump since he won the election, and hasn't missed a beat to oppose him and his Republican cohorts over the past month.
#4 - Martina Navratilova labels Donald Trump an "embarrassment" after his Thanksgiving message

Thanksgiving is an occasion meant to bring people together. However, the frostiness between Navratilova and Trump didn't thaw, especially after the latter's message to commemorate the festivities, in which he blasted his political rivals as "radical left lunatics".
"Happy Thanksgiving to all, including to the Radical Left Lunatics who have worked so hard to destroy our Country, but who have miserably failed, and will always fail, because their ideas and policies are so hopelessly bad that the great people of our Nation just gave a landslide victory to those who want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Donald Trump wrote.
"Don’t worry, our Country will soon be respected, productive, fair, and strong, and you will be, more than ever before, proud to be an American!" he added.
Navratilova wasn't pleased with the divisive language in Trump's message, that too on the eve of Thanksgiving. She called him an "embarrassment to the whole world", in a strongly worded response to his message.
"Really hard to explain this divisive nonsense. You are an embarrassment to the whole world. America is great now though could be better, and will be great and keep trying to be better long after you are gone," Martina Navratilova wrote.
Navratilova was a vocal critic of Trump even during his previous term as President. She opposed his divisive rhetoric back then as well and continues to do so yet again.
#3 - Martina Navratilova paints Donald Trump's business ventures as "scams"
One of Trump's campaign promises was to increase tariffs on imported goods from other countries. He assured the voters that it wouldn't affect them in any manner whatsoever.
Following his re-election, Trump announced plans to sign an Executive Order imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada. However, critics were quick to point out that it would indeed lead to a price rise and increased taxes on the American populace as well.
Trump's economic policies were questioned, and his acumen as a businessman was also questioned. When someone asked for an example of his successful ventures, Navratilova was quick to point out that none existed.
"Lol. Zero. None. Nada. It’s all a scam and we are the suckers," she posted on X.
Trump's chain of hotels and casinos was well-known, though six of them eventually filed for bankruptcy. One of the well-known ones was the Trump Entertainment Resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which went defunct in 2016.
#2 - Martina Navratilova blasts Donald Trump as a "wannabe dictator"

The rebels in Syria have gained control of the capital city of Damascus, which prompted President Bashar al-Assad to reportedly flee the country. Navratilova was certainly pleased with the developments and shared the same when she responded to noted author Robert Young Pelton.
"Damascus is falling," Robert Young Pelton.
“Assad is going down. And not a minute too soon," Martina Navratilova replied.
Mike Harvey, a Democratic politician from Florida, agreed with Navratilova. The latter also stated that while other countries are getting rid of their dictators, the US just elected one.
"Civilization needs to rid itself of dictators. They don't care about their citizens, they care about controlling them," Mike Harvey wrote on X.
"Yup. And we just elected one wannabe dictator here…" Martina Navratilova's response to Harvey.
Assad became the leader of Syria in 2000 and held on to power until the rebellion in December 2024. Democracy was throttled in the country, and Navratilova fears the same could happen here based on her response.
#1 - Martina Navratilova expresses her disapproval of Lara Trump's potential appointment to the senate
Lara Trump, who is the daughter-in-law of President-elect Trump, is in line for a potential senate appointment. According to reports, Florida Senator Marco Rubio may vacate his position to join the Trump administration as the Secretary of State, pending his confirmation.
If that were to happen, then Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will appoint an interim senator until the special election in 2026, a role for which Lara Trump is being eyed for. Her loyalty and experience make her a viable candidate for the position, though her critics, including Navratilova, see this as blatant nepotism.
"Nepotism anyone?" - Martina Navratilova on X.
Lara Trump recently resigned as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). This has further fueled speculation of her potential appointment to the Senate.
