Twelfth seed Frances Tiafoe locks horns with Lorenzo Sonego in the third round at the Miami Open on Monday (March 26).

The 14th-ranked Tiafoe improved to a 15-4 win-loss record this season by beating Yosuke Watanuki in the second round in straight sets. The 25-year-old is coming off a semifinal run at Indian Wells last week, losing to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Tiafoe also reached the quarterfinals at Dallas and Acapulco and made the Australian Open third round. Earlier, the American opened his campaign at the inaugural United Cup, where he won all five singles matches as Team USA won the competition. The 2022 US Open semifinalist is 13-5 in Miami, having reached the quarterfinals in 2019 and the fourth round in the last two years.

Meanwhile, World No. 59 Sonego beat wildcard Dominic Thiem and Daniel Evans to improve to 7-8 in 2023. The 27-year-old, coming off an opening-round exit at Indian Wells, made the quarterfinals in Montpellier and Dubai after starting the year with three losses in his first four matches. The Italian is now 5-3 in Miami, having made the fourth round in 2021, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Both Tiafoe and Sonego are quintessential baseliners, but Tiafoe is the more aggressive of the two players and has a stronger hardcourt game.

The American is a powerful server, hits strongly off either flank and is not averse to venturing forward to catch his opponent off-guard. He's also an elite mover and has a penchant for hitting winners from seemingly impossible angles.

Sonego, meanwhile, has more modest attributes and doesn't seem to have the weapons to beat an in-form Tiafoe. While he did beat the American in the pair's last hardcourt meeting, Tiafoe should take this one as he seeks to win his first Masters 1000 title this fortnight.
