Tsitsipas is looking to go deep in Miami.

Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on French veteran Richard Gasquet in the second round of the Miami Open on Saturday (March 25) after a first-round bye.

World No. 3 Tsitsipas is off to a 13-3 start in 2023, winning his first 10 matches before losing to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final. The 24-year-old returned to winning ways in the Davis Cup against Ecuador before losing to Jannik Sinner in the Rotterdam Round of 16.

Tsitsipas is coming off a shock opening-round exit at Indian Wells in the last fortnight, going down to Jordan Thompson in a third-set tiebreak, as his bright early-season start is in danger of dissipating.

Meanwhile, the 40th-ranked Gasquet improved to 8-6 on the season by beating Christopher O'Connell in his Miami opener. The reigning Auckland winner has crossed the opening hurdle at four straight ATP tournaments - Rotterdam, Marseille, and Indian Wells after losing in the first round at the Australian Open, and Montpellier.

Gasquet is coming off a Round of 16 exit at the Phoenix Challenger last week and is looking to reach the Miami third round for the first time in seven years (reached Round of 16 in 2016).

Gasquet won a title this year.

Both Tsitsipas and Gasque are largely baseliners but are not averse to coming to the net to win some 'cheap' points.

However, the Greek takes the edge, as he's the better player - especially on the hardcourt - where he has made a Grand Slam final and won the ATP Finals. Tsitsipas is a strong server, a powerful hitter of the ball, and moves well for his height.

Gasquet, meanwhile, is a throwback to a bygone era, with his signature single-handed backhand, but aesthetics don't win matches. The Frenchman hasn't beaten a top-10 player on hardcourt in four years (No. 6 Kei Nishikori, 2019 Montreal) and is unlikely to end that run against Tsitsipas.
