Davangere - Tamil Nadu tennis player Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash pulled off the first big upset of the ITF Davangere Open Men’s Futures Championship when he knocked out fifth seed Vijayant Malik 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 in two hours and 29 minutes in the first round on Monday.
Mayur, after dropping the first set, trailed 0-3 in the second but staged a gritty fight back. Malik made unforced errors and Mohit kept the momentum to close the set and match.
Top seed Sriram Balaji, after a sluggish start, rallied to find his rhythm and beat wild card Lakshit Sood 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0.
Davis Cupper Sanam Singh drubbed Arjun Khade 6-4, 6-0 while fourth seed and former National Champion Ranjeet V.M. beat Rakshay Thakkar 6-4, 6-0.
Sagar Manjanna was the third wild card to bow out, losing to Michael Shabaz of the United States 4-6, 0-6.
