Matteo Berrettini vs Maxime Cressy preview
Matteo Berrettini will face Maxime Cressy in the first round of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Berrettini has had a disappointing start to the 2023 season so far, winning only five out of 11 matches. Most of his wins came at the United Cup, where he helped Italy reach the final. He beat the likes of Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz during the tournament.
The Italian most recently competed at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters and lost in the opening round in both tournaments. He was beaten 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-3 by Taro Daniel in Indian Wells while losing 7-6(8), 7-6(5) to Mackenzie McDonald in Miami.
Maxime Cressy hasn't fared too well so far this season either, winning only seven out of 15 matches. The American most notably made it to the final of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, beating Antoine Bellier, Emil Ruusuvuori, Borna Coric and Holger Rune along the way.
Cressy is currently on a four-match losing streak, with his last victory coming back in February during the Open 13 in Marseille. The 25-year-old most recently competed at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech as the fifth seed, losing 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1 to Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round.

Matteo Berrettini vs Maxime Cressy prediction
Berrettini may not be in the best of form, but he will enter the match as the favorite to win due to his superior clay-court record. The Italian has won 45 out of 69 matches on the surface, while Cressy has won just one out of five. Both players are big servers, so we could witness a tiebreak or two as well.
Berrettini's forehand is a formidable weapon, along with his serve, and he will be eager to make the most out of it. His dropshots and net game will also come in very handy.
While Cressy can serve a lot of aces, his unforced-error count is an issue and he cannot have too many of those against the 26-year-old. The American has a good return game, which will no doubt be put to the test.
Berrettini's clay-court prowess along with Cressy's struggles on the surface makes him the favorite to win and he should be able to come out on top and reach the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Pick: Berrettini to win in straight sets.
