For Wimbledon, ATP’s ranking system has worked against Murray as he may end up facing the three other players comprising of the Big Four in tennis, if he is to win his home Slam.
Rafael Nadal has slipped down to be the fifth seed in Wimbledon even after winning Roland Garros for this year. This has happened as an obvious consequence of his seven-month injury layoff.
If all the top seeds come through the draw unscathed, the Brit will have to face the Spaniard in the quarters, and if he is able to defeat Rafa, might have to encounter defending champion Federer in the semis and then the World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the final!
Murray said, “Unfortunately, that’s the way the ranking system works in tennis.”
“It’s a one-year ranking whereas with golf it is a two-year ranking so even if one of the best players in the world gets injured, he can maintain his ranking.”
“In tennis, if you miss four or five months it is almost impossible to maintain your ranking.”
“So Rafa will be seeded five for Wimbledon, which is tough as he is better than that.”
“I saw that, with the bookies, Djokovic is the favourite, I’m second favourite, then Rafa third, then Roger. But who knows with the way Rafa played at the French Open? He can beat anyone playing like that.”
