McEnroe and Borg-Legends! |
This is a list of my greatest ever tennis players, that I have seen in watching beteen 1953-nowRod Laver (Australia)Arguably the greatest tennis player in the history of the game.He was the only man to win all 4 Grand Slams in the same year twice. His style was serve volley and his ground strokes were seen as flawless. He got the nickname of the ‘Rockhampton Rocket’ because of his pace around the court. In his career won 11 singles Grand Slams and many in doubles as wellRoger Federer (Switzerland)The genius Swiss player in truth at his peak was a near perfect player. He had it all from power to placement to real precison. His ground strokes were such a thing of beauty as well as being truly lethal. The part of his game that isn’t given its due respect, but is such a key is his unforced errors. The guy at his peak rarely made them!Testimony to his greatness was the fact that at his peak no one came close to him till Nadal challenged him.He destroyed everyone else in the top 10Currently holds the record of 16 singles Grand SlamsMats Wilander (Sweden)I loved Mats Wilander and struggle to find a player who was tougher in the mind than Mats.He was just that damned tough as seen in his epic Australian Open victory over the crowds idol Pat Cash in 1988.He wasn’t a power guy, but had such great ground strokes and will to win-which in professional sport can never be discounted. His court coverage too was exceptional. He ended his career with 7 Grand SlamsJimmy Connors (USA)The epitome of a street fighter of a player was Jimmy Connors.I loved his gladiatorial style of play.He won 8 singles Grand Slams and held the record of being Number 1 for the longest time.I think you could be on top of the man known as ‘Jimbo’ but to beat him was considerably different. He was so hard to beat even when his opponent was on topBjorn Borg (Sweden)The great Swede who won an exceptional 11 Grand Slams, but could have won many more due to retiring in his peak early at aged 27.He was one of the best all court players in the history of the game.Though had a very distinctive baseline style that was characterised by a two handed backhand. That at the time was seem as very unorthodox. He revolutionised the use of top spin and as such his ground strokes were so lethal due to there accuracy. He was the epitome of Ice Cool in temperamentPete Sampras (USA)‘Pistol’ Pete was such an exceptional player with his serve and athleticism being probably some of the best seen in the games history. He ruled at Wimbledon due to the arsenal he had and would arguably be the best player ever in the mens game. The only thing missing from his resume was victory at the French Open.Though 14 Grand Slams are testimony to his greatness.Andre Agassi (USA)One of the greatest ever players. Also one of the few to win all the 4 Grand Slams. He was such a great competitor and probably the best returner of serve in the history of the game.As seen in him being able to blunt the lethal serve of the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon. When everyone thought Goran would rule.In his career he won 8 Grand Slams singles TitlesIlie Nastase (Romania)For pure talent it’s hard to go past this great Romanian. He was a true showman and though he won only two singles titles at the French and the Us Opens,he should have won more.He was one of the most complete tennis players ever seen.Equally adept on the baseline or serve volleying. He won over 100 titles in his singles, doubles and mixed career
John McEnroe (USA)This great left armer was a true showman of a player.Known for his artistic play and his tactical use of his temper. His duels with Bjorn Borg were some of the best tennis matches ever seen.He was a serve and volley player and was one of the best ever in this style of play.He won 7 Grand SlamsKen Roswell (Australia)Good old ‘Muscles’ Roswell, what a great player and such a warrior on the Tennis court. The guy played tennis in 4 separate decades and won 132 single titles including 12 Grand SlamsRafael Nadal (Spain)In the back of my mind and people think im crazy, but I expect Nadal to finish his career holding the record for the most Singles Grand Slams.Barring further injury that has plague his career previously I can see him dominating the game for a while. In the current mens game, there is no one who can challenge him bar a fully fit Juan Martin Del Potro. His all round game is truly exceptional and now his serve has more power he’s almost unbeatableAt present he has 9 slams with many more to comeJohn Newcombe (Australia)The man who had the charisma in spades with his moustauche and his serve volley style of play and just his manner. One of the best serve volleyers in the history of the game and the winner of 8 singles Grand Slam Titles.Who would you choose as the best ever?
