The Six King Slams, featuring Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and other top men's tennis players was announced earlier this year. The star-studded event now has a confirmed date of October 16-19 and the announcement was made with a digitally created poster of the players donning a warrior-esque avatar, which sparked reactions from the fans.
Saudi Arabia has been expanding its horizons in the world of sports and tennis has been a huge part of their plans. The country has already appointed Rafael Nadal as its ambassador for the Saudi Tennis Federation and has also secured the rights to host the Next Gen ATP Finals from 2023 to 2027.
Earlier this year, they had announced the Six Kings Slam, an exhibition event that will pit the likes of Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, and Holger Rune against each other. However, no further details were revealed until recently.
It is now confirmed that the event will take place from October 16th to 19th in Riyadh, with a break on the 18th, since ATP doesn't permit players to play exhibitions three days in a row. They also released a poster of the six players in a warrior-esque avatar.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the news. One fan joked how there were three 'evils' on one side and three 'heroes' on the other, seemingly alluding to their fan reception.
“The have all 3 evils in one side and all the heroes in one side,” the fan commented.
Another fan joked that there was a Game of Thrones remake in the works
“I didn’t realise a Game of Thrones remake was in the works….,” the fan said.
Here are some other reactions from the fans.
“Why they made novak 30 years older,” a fan mentioned.
“For such a anti-LGBTQ+ country, why is this promo so camp?” a fan quipped.
“‘If we all go then we can all get the money and not get in trouble with fans’,” another fan quipped.
Here are some fan reactions containing gifs and photos.
“Nadal and Rune after the first match,” a fan alluded to their form.
“Everyone else: in hardcore warrior looking cosplay, Carlos:,” a fan joked about the Spaniard's outfit in the poster.
“Holger,“ a fan joked about his participation with a meme.
The players are guaranteed to take home $1.5 million, with the winner getting a prize of $6 million.
What Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and other participants of the Six Kings Slam are currently up to
While Rafael Nadal withdrew from the 2024 US Open, all the other players slated to play the Six Kings Slam have entered the final Grand Slam of the year. The Spaniard has confirmed that he will next be seen in action at the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin, which begins on September 20.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic, last year's runner-up Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner are all off to brilliant starts having won their opening rounds. While Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Medvedev are the last three men to win the title at Flushing Meadows (2023, 2022, 2021), Sinner is yet to open his Grand Slam account in New York.
Meanwhile, 15th seed Holger Rune was stunned by Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and had to face an early exit.
