Day 14 of the 2025 Australian Open saw 19th-seeded Madison Keys win her maiden Major title under the lights of Rod Laver Arena. She won a thrilling three-set contest, defeating the top seed Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The American player's win has helped her make a place for herself in tennis history books.
Let's look at some of the key career milestones that Keys achieved by lifting the Daphne Ackers trophy.
#4. Madison Keys became the oldest female player to win against World No. 1 and No. 2 at the semifinal and final at a Major
Madison Keys bagged the title at Melbourne Park by toppling the top two seeds in the semifinal and final. The American saved a match point and defeated World No. 2 Iga Swiatek in a super tiebreak in the semifinal. Another three-set thriller followed, in which the American triumphed against No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
At 29 years 342 days, Keys became the oldest player to achieve this feat at the 2025 Australian Open.
Keys overtook American legend Venus Williams. Williams, at the age of 25 years 15 days, had won the 2005 Wimbledon. En route to the trophy, she won against Maria Sharapova in the semifinal and defeated Lindsay Davenport in the final.
#3. Madison Keys had the fourth most Major appearances for her maiden title
Across men's and women's singles, Madison Keys had the fourth longest appearances at Majors, before she bagged the title. The 2025 Australian Open was her 46th appearance in a Major.
Keys is preceded by Marion Bartoli (47th appearances), Goran Ivanisevic (49 appearances), and Flavia Panetta who had 49 appearances at Majors before winning her only title at the 2015 US Open.
Keys had previously played at a Major final but was beaten by compatriot Sloane Stephens at the 2017 US Open.
#2. Madison Keys won the Australian Open by saving a match point
In the semifinal against Iga Swiatek, Madison Keys faced a match point. Despite it being on her opponent' serve, Keys found a way and won the match in a tiebreaker. This made Keys the first woman since Swiatek herself to win a Major while saving a match point.
The Pole won the 2024 French Open by saving a match point against Naomi Osaka.
Coincidentally, Osaka was the last woman to win the Australian Open title, after saving match point. The Japanese player won the 2021 title in Melbourne after saving match points against Garbine Muguruza in a fourth-round clash.
#1. Madison Keys became the first woman in the Open era to win four successive three-set matches to win a Major
With her win in Melbourne, Keys attained the unique distinction of being the only female player to win four successive three-set matches to win a Major.
The 19th seed went past the sixth seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round, won against 28th seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal, and then the top two seeds in Swiatek and Sabalenka in the final two matches.
Keys also played another three-set match at the Australian Open 2025, when she won against Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round.
