Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has expressed his joy at getting to rub shoulders with Bjorn Borg at the 2023 Laver Cup.
Swedish former World No. 1 Borg, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, is the captain of Team World, which includes the likes of Davidovich Fokina, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Gael Monfils, and Arthur Fils.
This year's edition of the Laver Cup got underway at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday, September 22. In the day session, Fokina lost 6-3, 7-5 to Team Europe's Francisco Cerundolo. He fought hard against Cerundolo, whose attempts to serve out the opening set at 5-1 and the second at 5-4 were well thwarted by Fokina.
At a press conference after the match, Spain's Fokina expressed his joy getting to meet Borg and said that he would tell his kids all about it in the future.
"It's gonna be a nice story when I will tell to my kids, for sure, that I have Bjorn next to me, after that I watched obviously not live, but I watched his games, and to have it there is quite similar when he plays. Very calm guy," he said with a smile.
"I think I just to have one more day to adapt my game here" - Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on transitioning from Davis Cup to Laver Cup
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was recently in action at the Davis Cup, where we managed to win only once — against South Korea's Kwon Soonwoo in the singles. He lost two matches each in singles and doubles as Spain crashed out of the tournament.
The Spaniard believes that he hasn't yet adapted to the playing surface at the Laver Cup, which was a reason for his defeat at the hands of Francisco Cerundolo.
"It's my first time here in Vancouver. Playing the Laver Cup was such a different tournament. At the end you play with your teammates and is not the Davis Cup and it's not individual. Then it's a little bit strange, but, you know, they will have their support to me. Then that gives me a lot of power," he explained.
"Well, for sure I needed one more day to adapt my game in this court. I came from Davis Cup and was faster than here. Here, when you have a couple rallies, the balls were bigger and bigger. I think I just to have one more day to adapt my game here, and I think I was ready," Alejandro Davidovich Fokina added.
