Alexander Zverev hilariously called Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti idiots for getting haircuts after his second-round win at the 2025 Australian Open. The German has been rocking a long hair look for the last few years and plays with a ponytail.
Zverev, seeded second, kicked off his campaign at the Happy Slam with a routine 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against Lucas Pouille. He then faced Pedro Martinez next and produced higher quality tennis, defeating the Spaniard 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 to continue his dominant run.
During the post-match interview, Zverev was asked to opine on the current trend of players like Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti getting haircuts ahead of the 2025 season. Zverev jokingly called them 'idiots' as they were missing out on their years with full heads of hair.
"I think they're idiots. Grow it out as long as you can. We're all going to be bald at some point, so, as long as you are not, just take full advantage of it."
When further questioned if he would don an 'Aussie mullet' if he won the Australian Open, Zverev had a hilarious one-word response,
"No."
Other players who have gotten haircuts ahead of the season's first major are Casper Ruud and Flavio Cobolli. Alexander Zverev was hilariously irked when he lost the 'Best Hair' award at the ATP Finals to Jannik Sinner and joked,
"He has the best hair? What the hell is this? I grew my hair for three years for this award and you’re giving it to him? Ah come on. I'm never going to win," Zverev said.
How have players with new haircuts and Zverev performed at the Australian Open so far?
Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz reach the third round of the 2025 Australian Open
Alexander Zverev will take on Jacob Fearnley in the third round of the Australian Open, in what will be the maiden meeting between the two men. Fearnley ousted Nick Kyrgios and Arthur Cazaux in his opening rounds.
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Alexander Shevchenko and Yoshihito Nishioka without dropping a set. He will face the dangerous Nuno Borges next. The Spaniard leads their head-to-head 1-0. Lorenzo Musetti ousted his compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in four sets and will play Denis Shapovalov in the second round.
Sixth seed Casper Ruud, who hasn't really played his best tennis at the Happy Slam, kicked off his campaign with a five-set thriller against Jaume Munar. He was stunned by 19-year-old Jakub Mensik 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6. On the other hand, 32nd seed Flavio Cobolli was defeated in the opening round by Tomas Etcheverry in four sets.
Interstingly, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev feature in the bottom half of the draw meaning they could face each other in the semifinals. However, the Spaniard may have to have to face 10-time Melbourne conqueror Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
