Alexander Zverev fell short of adding a Grand Slam title to his collection once again, losing to Jannik Sinner in the 2025 Australian Open final. The loss sparked criticism from tennis fans, who felt he had failed to live up to the expectations.
Zverev started his Melbourne campaign on a strong note, securing a commanding win over Lucas Pouille. He then triumphed over Pedro Martinez, Jacob Fearnley, Ugo Humbert, Tommy Paul, and Novak Djokovic, setting up a clash with Sinner.
Against the Italian on Sunday, January 26, the German put up a strong fight but luck was not on his side. Despite a determined comeback in the second set after losing the first, he fell 3-6, 6-7(4), 3-6. With that, he remains 0-3 in Grand Slam finals, having also lost in the 2020 US Open and 2024 French Open.
Fans have now taken to X (formerly Twitter) to slam Alexander Zverev for his loss with one writing:
"Alexander Zverev is so f**king scared of winning a major. Like, the fact he constantly finds himself in position to win one genuinely terrifies him."
Another wrote:
"'But at the same time, I do believe in karma.' Imagine feeling sorry for an abusive millionaire."
"It’s like he cannot believe he is capable of winning one. He gets to the final and doesn’t push enough," another added.
One account posted:
"But why tho, there's no reason. He had his chances and threw it all away. Man even had championship point while serving in the US Open and still lost. He simply doesn't have the mentality of a champ. And as long as he still plays like this then he stands no chance against anyone."
"He should have won a few tho lol. Literally was serving for the US slam a while back and he literally chocked a 2 set lead on Alcaraz at Roland Garros," another wrote.
One user tweeted:
"Zverev's funny because the old generation of the Big 4 won majors, his own generation of Medvedev and Thiem won majors, and the new generation of Alcaraz and Sinner have won Majors. Generational failure."
Alexander Zverev after Australian Open 2025 loss: "I am not good enough"
Alexander Zverev faced not only difficulty in winning his match against Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open but also during his post-match speech. As he spoke, someone from the stands shouted, "Australia believes Olya and Brenda," referring to his two ex-girlfriends who had accused him of domestic abuse.
Zverev later made a brutally honest admission, saying he wasn't good enough to win, and that Sinner was simply better on the day. He also vowed to return the following year, determined to give his best shot at securing the trophy.
"I was hoping I could be more competitive today, but you're just too good. You really deserve it. We're trying to do all the right work, I'm just not good enough. It's as simple as that," he said.
The World No. 2 added:
"The crowd has been nothing but amazing to me over the past two weeks. You guys pushed me through to the final. I didn't think I'd have a chance. I don't know if I'll ever be able to lift the trophy, but I'll keep trying. See you all next year."
Next year, the Melbourne Major will be held from January 18 to February 1
