ATP World No. 2 Alexander Zverev, accompanied by his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla, is soaking in the glory of the summer sun in Australia before launching his 2025 season. The German is set to return to tennis action at the 18-nation mixed-teams United Cup, where Germany is the defending champion.

Before getting his season underway, Zverev and Thomalla went on a romantic getaway to Rottnest Island just off-shore from Perth, Western Australia. A series of pictures from the serene outing shared by Thomalla captured the scenic view as well as moments of bonding between the couple.

She even shared a picture of a quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial, endemic to the islands. The two have been spending quality time during the off-season, frequently sharing updates from their lives on social media. Last month, the couple went to Joali Being, a luxury wellness island in the Maldives.

Notably, Alexander Zverev played a crucial role in leading his country to victory at the United Cup last year. The World No. 2 played four matches in just over 24 hours to bring home the cup for his team. In his singles rubber in the final against Poland, Zverev fended off two championship points against Hubert Hurcacz.

This year, Sascha will team up again with Laura Siegemund for the defense of the title, with newly crowned Nitto ATP Finals doubles champion Tim Puetz set to step in for the doubles.

Zverev will be looking to build on the momentum from his largely successful 2024 season. The German ended runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open and added to his Masters 1000 tally with victories in Rome and Paris.

Alexander Zverev has set lofty goals for his 2025 season

Alexander Zverev, ahead of starting his 2025 season, has recalled the career-threatening injury he suffered during a high-octane Roland Garros semifinal with Rafael Nadal in 2022. After dropping to No. 12 at the end of that year, his lowest ranking in 5 years, the German has clawed his way back into the Top 3 after impressive seasons in 2023 and 2024.

At the United Cup press conference, he said, "I mean, for me, look, I think in 2022 before I got injured, I was very close to world No. 1. I was one match away from being world No. 1. Then obviously the injury happened. Of course, I'm happy to be back in that position. I'm happy that I am competing for hopefully big events, competing for the best spots in our sport."

However, the German has asserted that he is not "satisfied yet" and wants to achieve his dream of finally winning a Grand Slam.

Alexander Zverev added,"I still want to achieve my goals. I still want to achieve my dreams. I felt like this year, yeah, I have been close on multiple occasions to maybe getting my first Grand Slam. Didn't quite get there. Of course, if I stay healthy and if I stay fit, that is the main goal."

A 23-time winner on the ATP Tour, Alexander Zverev has traditionally performed well in Melbourne, reaching the final four on two occasions (2020 and 2024). In last year's semifinals, he squandered a two-set advantage against Daniil Medvedev, who roared back to take the match 6-3 in the fifth.
