Alexander Zverev won his first title of the year on Sunday, beating Nicolas Jarry in straight sets in the final of the 2024 Italian Open. The German, by doing so, took home his sixth career Masters 1000 title and first at the level since 2021.
Zverev and Jarry matched each other shot for shot in the first set, holding their serves until 4-4. Just as the German held his next service game to put the pressure on Jarry, the Chilean capitulated, losing his serve to love to hand the set to his opponent.
The second set proceeded in similar fashion, with both players staying even until 4-4 and then Zverev raising the stakes by taking a 5-4 lead. Serving to stay in a set for the second time on the night, Jarry held strong to hold for 5-5. At 6-5, though, the Chilean faltered on his second break point, allowing Zverev to take the match 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 40 minutes.
The last time Alexander Zverev won a Masters 1000 title before Rome was in 2021, when he defeated Andrey Rublev to win the Cincinnati Open. The former World No. 2 now has two Italian Open titles, having previously won in 2017. Overall, he has won 22 ATP Tour titles, with two of them coming at the ATP Finals.
