Alexander Zverev made a winning start at the 2025 Australian Open, beating former US Open quarterfinalist Lucas Pouille in straight sets on Sunday, January 12. The 2023 Australian Open semifinalist looked in good spirits as he joked with his father and brother.
This year's Australian Open has created a special area for the coaches to sit, situating them much closer to the player than before. During the post-match interview, Zverev was asked about it and the German used that opportunity to roast his father and brother, who are part of his coaching setup.
"I hate it. Basically I don't wanna see them too much in my life but it's the way it is. I chose them as my coaches unfortunately. Well, I didn't really have a choice to be honest. What am I gonna say.. I think there is innovation in all sports. Tennis is getting innovation as well. Not sure what kind of innovation that is but we're moving forward, the world is moving forward so it is how it is," he said (1:00 onwards).
During the conversation, Zverev also took the opportunity to take a hilarious dig at Mischa following the latter's claims of being able to beat the former World No. 2.
"I do like my chances" - Alexander Zverev on defeating his brother Mischa
The interviewer also brought up Mischa Zverev's claims of being better than his younger brother and that he could beat Alexander when he was at his best. The 2024 French Open winner used the opportunity to point out that he has far more trophies than his older brother, saying:
"He said that when he's at his best he's better than when I am at my best? I mean he has one tour title, I have 23 so. It's a bit of a tough comparison. He was a great player but I do like my chances."
Alexander Zverev essentially grew up on Tour, following his older brother at events and getting a chance to practice with some of the best tennis players of all time.
The two-time Grand Slam winner will now face Pedro Martinez on Wednesday, January 15 in his bid to clinch his first Slam Down Under. The Spaniard reached the second round courtesy of his opponent Lucia Darderi withdrawing midway through the match when Pedro was leading 6-3, 4-1.
The head-to-head between Alexander Zverev and Pedro Martinez reads 1-0 in the favor of the German.
