After his heartbreaking loss in the Australian Open final, Alexander Zverev shared a heartfelt message for Jannik Sinner. The German and the Italian had battled it out in the tournament’s final match at the Rod Laver Arena.
On Sunday, January 26, second seed Zverev went up against top seed Sinner in the final. Despite a setback in the first set, the German fought hard in the second, pushing it to a tiebreaker. However, Sinner proved too strong, defeating Zverev in straight sets with a commanding scoreline of 3-6, 6-7(4), 3-6.
During his on-court speech, Alexander Zverev opened up about his emotions following his third loss in a Grand Slam final—after the 2020 US Open, the 2024 French Open, and now the 2025 Australian Open. He shared the pain of standing so close to the trophy yet being unable to touch it, describing the moment as deeply heartbreaking. He said:
“It s*cks standing here next to this thing and not being able to touch it, I'll be honest.”
The German congratulated the Italian on his victory and acknowledged him as the best player in the world.
“First of all, congratulations to Jannik. You more than deserve it. You're the best player in the world by far.”
Zverev reflected on his performance and acknowledged his shortcomings, while praising Sinner, stating that the Italian was "too good" during the match.
“Yeah, I mean, I was hoping that I could be more competitive today, but you're just too good. It's as simple as that. So, congratulations to you. You really deserve it. Congrats to your team as well.”
He added:
“You've done all the right things. You've done all the work and yeah, there's nobody that deserves this trophy more.”
