Alexander Zverev roasting his father and brother Mischa during the post-match interview after his opening-round win at the 2025 Australian Open has sparked polarizing views from tennis fans. While some found the German's jokes funny, others thought he was trying too hard.
Zverev kicked off his Australian Open campaign with a resounding 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against Lucas Pouille. During his on-court interview, he was asked about his feelings on the new system at the Happy Slam this year, which allows the coaching team to be close to the court, to which he jokingly responded by making fun of his father and brother Mischa, who act as his coaches as well.
"I hate it. Basically. I don't wanna see them too much in my life but it's the way it is. I chose them as my coaches unfortunately. Well, I didn't really have a choice to be honest. What am I gonna say.. I think there is innovation in all sports. Tennis is getting innovation as well. Not sure what kind of innovation that is but we're moving forward, the world is moving forward so it is how it is."
However, Alexander Zverev's interview didn't sit too well with a tennis fan who took to X (formerly Twitter) to call him out.
"Alexander Zverev tries so hard to come across as funny in interviews and it's always just so f**king jarring and weird. Doesn't seem genuine at all," the fan commented.
Interestingly, another fan had a completely opposite view.
"This Alexander Zverev on court interview after winning is one of the funniest i’ve ever seen in my time watching tennis and i’m not even exaggerating. I’m laughing my a** off here," the fan remarked.
Here are other reactions from some fans, who felt that Zverev was trying hard.
"True. I also feel unwell to watch those odd interviews," a fan said.
"Gotta see him on German Eurosport with Stach and Becker... even in German he really tries but not funny at all," a fan mentioned.
However, other fans defended Zverev's comments.
"I actually find him quite funny. Not everyone has the same sense of humor," a fan remarked.
"What do you have against Zverev? Seems like a good guy," a fan questioned.
"He has one tour title, I have 23" - Alexander Zverev jokes about 'liking his chances' against his brother Mischa
During the on-court interview, Alexander Zverev was told that his brother Mischa was confident he would defeat his younger brother when both men were at their best. The World No. 2 was asked what he thought of this possible matchup to which he hilariously poked fun at his brother.
"He said that when he's at his best he's better than when I am at my best? I mean he has one tour title, I have 23 so. It's a bit of a tough comparison. He was a great player but I do like my chances."
Alexander Zverev is set to face Pedro Martinez in the second round of the Australian Open. The German leads their head-to-head 1-0.
