World No. 5 Alexander Zverev will lock horns with Nicolas Jarry in the final of the 2024 Italian Open on Sunday, May 19. The German staged a comeback to beat Alejandro Tabilo 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the semifinals. He matched Boris Becker's record of 11 Masters finals with his run in Rome.
Jarry survived a late surge from Tommy Paul in the semifinals to score a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over him and reach his maiden Masters 1000 final. He also became the first player from Chile to reach a final at this level since Fernando Gonzalez did the same at the 2007 Italian Open.
Zverev leads Jarry 4-2 in the head-to-head but the two are tied 2-2 on clay. The former won their most recent match at the 2023 China Open in three sets, while the latter won their previous duel on clay at last year's Geneva Open in straight sets.
This is Zverev's first individual final of the season as he won the United Cup with his fellow Germans earlier this year. Jarry previously reached the final of the Argentina Open in February but lost to Facundo Diaz Acosta in straight sets.
Zverev's accomplishments make him the overwhelming favorite to capture his second title in Rome. However, Jarry is no pushover and is a strong player on clay. This has the potential to be a nailbiting finale, so here are the details of their upcoming showdown:
