Carlos Alcaraz winning the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and in turn surpassing Andy Murray's tally of total Grand Slams won left the tennis fans in awe. The Spaniard's title win at SW19 marked his second Grand Slam title of the season.
Alcaraz was seeded third at this year's grasscourt Major. He defeated qualifier Mark Lajal, Aleksander Vukic, 29th seed Frances Tiafoe and 16th seed Ugo Humbert in the first four rounds. He then overcame 12th seed Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals and fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals to advance to the final.
In the championship match, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) at Centre Court to claim the 2024 Wimbledon Championships title. With this win, the Spaniard became youngest man in the Open Era to achieve the Channel Slam, winning both the French Open and Wimbledon titles in a single season. Alcaraz also became just the second man in the Open Era to win his first four Grand Slam finals, following Roger Federer who won his first seven finals.
Alcaraz previously won the 2022 US Open, defeating Casper Ruud in the final; the 2023 Wimbledon Championships by defeating Novak Djokovic; and the 2024 French Open, defeating Alexander Zverev.
By securing his fourth Grand Slam title, Alcaraz surpassed Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, who each have three Grand Slam titles, in the tally for most Grand Slam titles won in men's singles among active players. He now ranks third behind Novak Djokovic (24) and Rafael Nadal (22)
Tennis fans were left in awe of this achievement by the Spaniard. They took to social media to share their feelings.
Replying to the statistic shared in a tweet by journalist Jose Morgado, one fan on X suggested that Carlos Alcaraz has overshadowed and "buried" Murray's legacy:
"Already buried Murray’s legacy 😂 😂 "
Another fan predicted that he is on track to challenge Novak Djokovic's record of 24 Grand Slam titles:
"He’s literally coming for NOVAK record. I don’t see NOVAK winning anymore."
Several other fans were amazed by Carlos Alcaraz's ability to surpass Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka in the number of Grand Slam titles won in men's singles among active players.
"Crazy that a 21 year old has already passed Murray and Stan," a fan posted.
"Incredible how he already has more slams than Murray 😭 " this fan wrote.
"Murray legacy in mud 😭 " a fan posted.
Some fans stated that that it felt "wrong" to point out that a 21-year-old had overtaken Andy Murray in this category. However they acknowledged the challenges Murray faced in his career, particularly competing against the Big 3 - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic - in their prime.
"Knowing what Andy had to go through to win his 3, feels so wrong that a 21yo has already surpassed him 😂 " a fan wrote.
"Naa Murray needs justice , he would have 20+ grand slams but he was playing 3 all timers in their prime 😂 😂 😂 😂 " a fan posted.
Carlos Alcaraz on winning Wimbledon 2024: "A dream for me"
Following his win against Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, during his post-match on-court interview, Carlos Alcaraz stated that it was a dream come true for him:
"It is a dream for me, winning this trophy. In an interview when I was 11 or 12 years old I said my dream was to win Wimbledon, so I am replaying my dream. I want to keep going but it is a great feeling to play in this beautiful court and to lift this amazing trophy. This is the most beautiful tournament, most beautiful court and most beautiful trophy."
Alcaraz, who became just the sixth man in the Open Era after Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic to win the Channel Slam, stated that it was a huge honour for him to be part of such a legendary list:
"It is a huge honour for me to be part of those players who have achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. They are huge champions. I don't consider myself a champion yet, not like them, but I will keep going to build my path, my journey. It is a huge honour for me."
Carlos Alcaraz has faced Novak Djokovic thrice at the Grand Slam level - in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open and in the finals of the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He has improved his head-to-head record against the Serb at the Major level to two wins and one loss after claiming the title at SW19 this year.
