Tennis men's player Christopher Eubanks has poked fun at former US President Donald Trump's exchange with journalists at a Q&A session. Eubanks made some comments on social media following Trump attending a National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago on Wednesday, 31 July. The latter at one point made a claim concerning illegal immigrants and "Black jobs" in the USA, which was followed by an exchange that Eubanks picked out on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
The 78-year-old's Q&A session with journalists at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention & Career Fair got off to a tempestuous start following a delay that he blamed on the audio equipment. Journalist Rachel Scott asked Trump right off the bat why Black voters should trust him considering his past verbal attacks on Black district attorneys and journalists.
The former US President bemoaned the nature of the question, and the exchange seemed to set the tone for what was to come. Later on, Trump claimed that millions of illegal immigrants from beyond the USA's borders have poured into the country and are taking away "Black jobs".
"I will tell you that, coming from the border, are millions and millions of people that happen to be taking Black jobs," Trump said.
Jeers followed, with Scott going on to ask the 78-year-old about what he meant by the term "Black jobs". Trump replied:
"A Black job is anybody that has a job. They're taking the employment away from Black people."
ATP star Eubanks, a 28-year-old late bloomer who shot to fame after his run to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, took notice of Trump's claims on X (formerly Twitter). The former World No. 29 specifically picked out Scott's question after Trump voiced his claim, and the former US President seeming attempt to make amends:
"The set up to this question and the answer that was given was AMAZING," Eubanks wrote.
"I think the future looks bright" - Christopher Eubanks' recent reflection on topsy-turvy ride since Wimbledon 2023 success story
Eubanks' stellar run to the 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinals saw him break into the top 30 of the ATP Tour rankings. Unfortunately for the Atlanta native, his time near the top tier of men's tennis did not last long. Subsequent struggles with form saw Eubanks' rankings dip drastically. Right now, the 28-year-old is ranked at a lowly No. 110 in the ATP rankings.
Recently, the former World No. 29 acknowledged his struggles in an interview with the official website of the ATP Tour. However, according to him, he has improved as a player at the same time. Eubanks also expressed optimism over his results after saying that a "weight had been lifted" off him with the passage of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, where he lost his opener against qualifier Quentin Halys.
"I feel like I’m a better player than I was a year ago, but I just can’t get any wins. There’s a lot of ground to make up, and that’s the most exciting thing for me. Now that the weight has been lifted, I can find my form and play my way. At least I have the opportunity to play my way and be in good shape. I think the future looks bright," Eubanks said.
Eubanks' most recent outing came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made his Olympic debut but failed to make it past the first round in the men's singles event, losing to Lebanon's Benjamin Hassan.
