Emma Navarro caught the attention of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf's daughter Jaz after her dramatic first-round encounter at the 2025 Australian Open on Tuesday (January 14). Navarro impressively fought back from the brink of defeat to advance to the second round of the Major.
Navarro made a shaky start to her tournament opener against fellow American Peyton Stearns, losing the opening set in a tiebreak and trailing 0-2 in the second. Although Stearns fended off three set points in the second set, the World No. 8 dug deep to force a decider.
Peyton Stearns also had the opportunity to serve for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Emma Navarro displayed her resilience to clinch a hard-fought 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5 victory after a riveting three-hour and 20-minute battle. Shortly after her impressive victory, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf's daughter Jaz gave a shoutout to the 23-year-old.
Before commencing her campaign at the Australian Open, Navarro took to social media and shared a glimpse of her enjoying some downtime by practicing her cooking skills and showing off her dance moves.
"New cooking skills, same dance moves," Navarro captioned her Instagram post.
Following her victory, Jaz Agassi reshared Emma Navarro's post on Instagram while putting focus on a picture of the World No. 8 on the tennis court.
Emma Navarro to lock horns with Wang Xiyu in Australian Open 2R
Following her hard-fought thriller against Peyton Stearns, Emma Navarro will hope for an easier path to victory as she gears up to face Wang Xiyu in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open.
The World No. 8 reflected on her "unique" encounter against Stearns in her post-match press conference, revealing how she motivated herself to mount a comeback and secure the victory.
"One of the more unique matches I've played in a while. Definitely did not have my best stuff today. Yeah, it was just relying a lot, I guess, on my grit and toughness and fight. I think, yeah, she had a lot of moments there where she could have maybe closed it out or run away with it. I just tried to stay really tough," Navarro said.
"I just kept telling myself there at the end, 'Make the most of the skills I have today.' I think maybe that's something that kind of clicked there for me at the end," she added.
Wang defeated Julia Grabher 6-1, 7-5 to book her place against the eighth seed. Navarro holds a 1-0 lead in her head-to-head record against the Chinese, having claimed a 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-5 victory in their sole previous encounter at last year's edition of the Melbourne Slam.
If Emma Navarro triumphs over Wang Xiyu once more, she will likely face Ons Jabeur or Maria Sakkari in the third round. The American's potential fourth-round opponents include Daria Kasatkina and Yulia Putintseva, with second seed Iga Swiatek possibly looming in the quarterfinals.
