Andy Murray and Dan Evans went from partners to rivals merely days after the former's retirement at the 2024 Paris Olympics campaign. Notably, the Brits faced each other in a game of golf.
Upon his arrival in Paris ahead of his campaign, the 37-year-old announced that the Olympics would be the final event of his career. Before this, he had an emotional farewell ceremony at Wimbledon where he teamed up with his brother Jamie Murray. Though they were ousted in the opening round, the Brit had a chance to give a moving speech to the tennis fraternity.
At the Olympics, The Brit teamed up with compatriot Dan Evans for his final campaign and the two were off to an electric start, ousting the Japanese duo of Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori in three sets and saving five match points in the process. They saved two match points against Belgium's Sander Gill and Joran Vliegen to reach the quarterfinals
Their run was ended by Team USA's Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz in straight sets, a defeat that also closed the book on Murray's illustrious career on August 1.
Merely days after his retirement, Andy Murray recently posted a story on his Instagram which was a selfie of a serious-looking Dan Evans with the two-time Wimbledon champion seemingly practicing his golf swing in the background. The former World No. 1 was facing his Olympic partner in a golf match.
"Partners last week... opponents today⛳," Murray wrote.
Interestingly, ahead of his Olympics campaign, Murray was asked by a fan what his sporting and life goals were after retiring to which he said that being a scratch golfer was his sporting goal.
"So my sporting and life goals after the Olympics are, I would like to try and become a scratch golfer and that's my sporting goal."
He later revealed that his life goal was to be a good dad and be there for his wife.
Dan Evans lost more than 110 ranking spots to team up with Andy Murray at the 2024 Paris Olympics, gets a shoutout from Judy Murray
Dan Evans, who was the defending champion at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, missed out on the tournament to team up with Andy Murray at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Evans was seeded ninth and ousted the likes of Frances Tiafoe, Grigor Dimitrov, and Tallon Griekspoor in the final to win the ATP 500 tournament.
However, he withdrew from the tournament and as a result lost all of the 500 points he had earned which meant a drop from the top 60 to falling out outside 170.
Andy Murray's mother Judy gave a shoutout to Evans for foregoing his ranking points to play with her son.
"Most of you watching on Sunday and last night will not know this…… ❤️🇬🇧"
Dan Evans dropped 118 places and is currently ranked 176 in the world.
