Andy Murray made a joking remark about 'sabotaging' Novak Djokovic's Australian Open bid as coach after mentioning how the Serb stopped him from winning the title. Murray and Djokovic played some exceptional matches at the Melbourne Slam but the Serb came out on top on all occasions.
Djokovic faced Alexander Zverev in an exhibition match at the Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, January 9, ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. The Serb won the one-set charity match via a tiebreaker. He answered numerous questions before, during, and after the match.
In a twist, former world No. 1 Andy Murray joined Djokovic and Zverev during the post-match interview. Although Murray retired from professional tennis in August 2024, he was announced as Djokovic’s new coach for the 2025 season.
While Djokovic had already competed in Brisbane amid Murray's absence, this match in Melbourne offered fans a preview of their new partnership. During the interview, Murray reminisced about how Djokovic had prevented him from winning the Australian Open in the past, and jokingly shared his thoughts:
"Yeah, played here a few times, could never quite go over the line, unfortunately. This man [pointing to Djokovic] is singlehandedly responsible for that. So, I'm now here to try and sabotage his chances of winning another one."
Murray and Djokovic clashed five times in the Australian Open between 2011 and 2016. The Serb emerged victorious each time, defeating Murray in four finals (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and a semifinal (2012), effectively preventing the Brit from ever claiming the title.
"Novak Djokovic is one of the best athletes of all time" - Andy Murray heaps praise on Serb ahead of Australian Open 2025
During the same interview, Andy Murray heaped praise on Novak Djokovic. The Brit revealed that he expected the 24-time Grand Slam champion to be diligent and hard-working.
"Novak is not just one of the best tennis players of all time, he is one of the best athletes of all time. I expected him to be an extremely hard worker, very diligent, always looking to improve. So, it's as I expected, and looking forward to competing now," Andy Murray said.
Djokovic is set to begin the quest for his 25th Grand Slam title in the coming days against Nishesh Basavareddy. The 19-year-old American is currently competing at the ASB Classic in Auckland and is touted to take on Gael Monfils in the semifinal. Djokovic will have to be wary of the teenager making waves at the top level.
