Amid confusion over Andy Murray's participation at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, Boris Becker has firmly backed the Brit to decide on his participation. Wimbledon is scheduled to begin on Monday, 1 July 2024.

Andy Murray recently underwent surgery to remove a cyst in his back, which has complicated his chances of playing in this year's Wimbledon Championships. He was forced to retire from his second-round match with Jordan Thompson at the cinch Championships at The Queen's Club in London, due to injury.

The two-time Wimbledon champion provided an update on his chances of competing at this year's marquee grass-court event. In a released statement, Murray said he deserves to take his time deciding whether he should participate at Wimbledon. He did add that he desires to play at Wimbledon again.

"I feel that I deserve the opportunity to give it until the very last moment to make that decision. It's complicated and it's made more complicated because I want to play at Wimbledon one more time," Murray said.

The 37-year-old further stated that he hopes to go out playing a "proper match" and not like his match with Thompson at Queen's where he could not finish the game due to injury. He also hinted about playing doubles with his brother Jamie.

He added -

"Because of what I put into the sport over the last however many years, I would at least like to go out playing a proper match where I'm at least competitive, not what happened at Queen's. Maybe this is just how it was meant to happen for me. Getting to play with Jamie in the doubles is something that obviously I have never done before. That can be special as well."

In response to Murray's statements, German legend and three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker backed the Brit to take his time before deciding on his participation at the mega event, saying that the player has "earned" the right to do so.

He tweeted -

"Sir Andrew Murray, after all his accomplishments in tennis particularly at Wimbledon), has earned the right to decide when he is ready to play tennis again, period!"

Earlier this year, Murray had hinted at retiring from the sport after the current season's summer swing. Hence, this year's Wimbledon might well be the last of his legendary career.

Andy Murray's mother Judy has hit back at the reports of his withdrawal from the upcoming Wimbledon Championships due to injury. She also lashed out at British media accusing them of leaking her son's confidential information.

Judy responded to a post which suggested that Andy Murray won't be participating in this year's Wimbledon due to an operation on his spinal cyst.

She tweeted -

"When your private medical details are leaked to the media by someone you thought you could trust. So disappointing. And - FYI - not ruled out yet."

Andy Murray is one of the most successful players to grace the Wimbledon Championships, winning the competition two times in his illustrious career.
