Judy Murray recently gave props to Dan Evans for foregoing his Mubadala Citi DC Open title defense to team up with her son Andy Murray in the men's doubles competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The former World No. 1 is vying for his fourth career medal at the Games and has found a worthy partner in Evans.

Murray and Evans began their Olympics campaign by staving off five consecutive match points, beating Japan's Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel 2-6, 7-6(5), [11-9] to reach the second round. The British duo save two more match points in their next match against Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, coming through 6-3, 6-7(8), [11-9].

A few hours after their heroics, journalist Mario Boccardi took to X (formerly Twitter) to point out that Dan Evans, who is currently ranked at No. 58 in the ATP singles rankings, missed this week's 500-level event in Washington, D.C. for national duty at the Olympics. The 34-year-old had won the singles title there last year. Due to his absence at the 2024 edition of the tournament, he will now drop an estimated 114 ranking spots.

Andy Murray's mother Judy soon caught wind of the above news, reposting Boccardi's post on her own X handle. She insisted that British fans ought to know of Evans' sacrifice, writing:

"Most of you watching on Sunday and last night will not know this……"

Andy Murray and Dan Evans will next face either USA's Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or Netherlands' Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer for a place in the semifinals. The three-time Major winner recently confirmed that the Paris Olympics will mark his last outing as a tennis pro. He was initially supposed to compete in men's singles as well, but withdrew from the competition at the last moment.

Andy Murray is arguably the most successful male tennis player in the Open Era to have played at the Olympics. The Brit won a gold medal in men's singles and a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2012 London Olympics, and followed it up with another gold in singles four years later in Rio.

Murray's greatest campaign at the quadrennial event came on the lawns of Wimbledon in 2012, where he defeated Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in back-to-back matches to secure gold in men's singles. He also teamed up with Laura Robson to notch silver in mixed doubles.

The three-time Major winner defended his Olympic gold in the men's singles competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics, downing Juan Martin Del Potro in a closely-contested final. He has also reached the quarterfinals in mixed doubles and men's doubles in 2016 and 2021, respectively.
