Andy Roddick reacted to the controversial VAR call taken during Anna Kalinskaya and Beatriz Haddad Maia's third-round match at the 2024 US Open. The Brazilian comfortably ousted Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour and 20 minutes to reach the fourth round.

The 2024 North American hard-court swing saw a lot of controversies due to umpiring decisions, which many felt could have been avoided if there was VAR in use. Some of the players who bore the brunt of controversial umpiring decisions were Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe, and Coco Gauff. Hence, the US Open decided to implement the VAR system to avoid such controversies.

However, controversy has yet again marred the tennis world leaving the players and fans enraged. During the opening set, Haddad Maia was leading 2-0 40-40 on her serve, when she returned a ball that seemingly bounced twice. However, she was awarded the point which shocked Anna Kalinskaya, who later asked for VAR.

It was shown that the Russian's suspicion was correct and the ball had in fact bounced twice. Much to her surprise, the chair umpire still awarded the point to Haddad Maia which led to a huge argument between the umpire and Kalinskaya. The 15th seed's pleas came to no avail as it was the Brazilian, who was awarded the point.

The tennis world erupted in anger as an incorrect call was made even after the implementation of VAR. One of the critics was Andy Roddick, who took to X to express his disappointment, in his typical style. He quipped:

"Us: There’s finally replay available for every situation. All right there to see. What could possibly go wrong ? Umpire: hold my beer 🍺."

"Absolutely horrible" - Serena Williams' ex-coach Rennae Stubbs also outraged over the call made against Anna Kalinskaya

Serena Williams' ex-coach Rennae Stubbs also called out the horrible call made against Anna Kalinskaya on X.

"Absolutely horrible! How do u NOT get that right," she wrote.

She then questioned how the umpire got the decision wrong even after looking at the replay. Stubbs was surprised how, even after using VAR, the wrong decision was made.

"How the hell do you get that wrong on Armstrong WITH VAR!!! What the hell is the umpire looking at!!!! Omggggg!!!!! Wowza! You have VAR and u still get it wrong! I’m shook!" she tweeted.

Later on, Stubbs also lambasted Beatriz Haddad Maia for accepting a point she didn't deserve.
