Andy Roddick shared his excitement as an American man is guaranteed to play in the 2024 US Open final. With Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe both reaching the semifinals, it will be the first time since 2006 that an American man will play the final at the New York Slam.
Fritz created some personal history as he reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at his home Slam. He defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Matteo Berrettini, Francisco Comesana, Casper Ruud, and Alexander Zverev to reach the semifinal.
Frances Tiafoe, on the other hand, defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexander Shevchenko (walkover), Ben Shelton, Alexei Popyrin, and Grigor Dimitrov (walkover) to set up a semifinal encounter against the American No. 1.
Andy Roddick, who was the last man to reach the summit clash at the US Open in 2006, rejoiced as the US Open was finally guaranteed an American in the men's final. Roddick is also the last American man to win the title in New York, in 2003.
". 🇺🇸🤝🇺🇸 Lets go" he wrote.
Frances Tiafoe talked about facing compatriot Fritz in the semifinals and said that it would be a big moment for both of them.
"It's going to be tough. It's going to be a big moment for both of us to play in a final... It's going to be interesting man I mean we'll see what happens," Tiafoe said in the post-match press conference.
Andy Roddick lauds 'healthy jealousy' among American tennis stars, such as Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe
Andy Roddick lauded American tennis stars such as Frances Tiafoe, Tayor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, Sebastian Korda, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Danielle Collins, and Madison Keys. He said during an interview at Good Morning America that it was a 'big deal' that five men and women were in the top 20 of ATP and WTA rankings.
"Specifically with the American men, as we currently stand, we have 25% of the Top 20 men [in the world rankings]. That's a big deal. Five in the Top 20 on the men's side, five in the Top 20 on the women's side," Roddick said.
The 2003 US Open champion added that even though the current lot of American tennis players had 'healthy jealousy' among them, they support and respect each other.
"It seems like they have kind of this healthy jealousy where they all get along, they all respect each other, they all support each other. But also, I feel there's a little bit of FOMO if someone makes a run to the semis. I hope someone breaks out in a big way," he said.
Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe will hope to put their best foot forward in their semifinal match with history on the line.
