Nick Kyrgios' comeback in 2025 didn't start without controversy as he made a controversial comment on Cruz Hewitt's latest Instagram post which featured the 16-year-old posing alongside Jannik Sinner. In light of the same, Andy Roddick criticized the Australian's comments on the social media post.
Ever since the news of Jannik Sinner's doping was made public, Nick Kyrgios has been unrelenting in his digs toward the Italian. The Australian has frequently made comments toward the World No. 1 and his comments on Lleyton Hewitt's son Cruz's Instagram post was the latest attack on the 2024 Australian Open winner.
In light of this event, Andy Roddick addressed the issue in a recent episode of his podcast 'Served'. Accompanied by renowned journalist Jon Wertheim, the former American pro talked about how this move from Kyrgios was 'unbelievable', saying:
"It was unbelievable. So imagine as a 30 year old man, going into the comments of a 16 year old who has just hit with someone who is the best player in the world. If you think he's guilty, if you think he's not guilty, its still a moment when you get to do that, no matter who your dad is. His dad was no. 1 in the world," he said (43:50 minutes).
Roddick also didn't back down from slamming the argument that Nick Kyrgios presented after his comments on Cruz's post invited criticism.
"That's a big moment and to simply post a picture and then have this guy going to the comments and make it all about himself. 'Oh I thought we were bros', whatever he says. So, one- its just making it about you which, he does. Two - a syringe, which is not even, I'm gonna get to my point of this hypocrisy in a second and then defence was all made, it was a joke," he added.
During a press conference at the Brisbane International, Nick Kyrgios made it clear that he wasn't done with his criticism of Jannik Sinner.
Kyrgios, right after his comeback to the court after a long break, has expressed eagerness for a potential showdown against the World No.1 at the Australian Open.
Serena Williams' ex-coach Rennae Stubbs slams Nick Kyrgios for his comments
Nick Kyrgios' comments on Criz Hewitt's post were deemed to be inappropriate by several people in the tennis fraternity. Besides Andy Roddick, Serena Williams' former coach Rennae Stubbs also took a moment to disapprove of the Australian's methods of slamming the World No. 1.
In the last episode of her well-known podcast, the ex-pro criticized Kyrgios, saying that his Instagram comments were made in poor taste and embarrassed the 16-year-old.
"Going after Cruz Hewitt, for hitting with the world number one, who is coached by the guy who coached his Dad, in Lleyton Hewitt, Darren Cahill was essentially one of the biggest and most important people in Lleyton Hewitt’s early life as a tennis player, helping him get to number one, so they have a special relationship. They are both from Adelaide. They clearly have a unique and special relationship,” she said.
Siding with Lleyton Hewitt's son Cruz in the matter, she also made her thoughts clear about Kyrgios stepping out of the line.
"Of course, Lleyton is going to say yes to that. That is an opportunity any kid would want. To give the guy s*** on social media and go after him is not a joke. If you want to joke, you call his Dad or call him, because I’m pretty sure you have either of their numbers. You don’t give him sh*t on a public forum, that’s embarrassing to him. He just doesn’t know how to stop and learn to be an adult in these situations," the ex-pro added.
Cruz Hewitt recently faced an unexpected defeat against Nikoloz Basilashvili and lost his chances of entering the Australian Open main draw.
