Estonian tennis star Anett Kontaveit has become a mother for the first time. The former World No. 2 took to social media to announce the birth of her baby boy with boyfriend Brent Lepistu.
Just over a year after her tennis career ended prematurely, Kontaveit welcomed her first child. The 28-year-old's last appearance on the WTA Tour came at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. She defeated Lucrezia Stefanini before losing to Marie Bouzkova in the singles and partnered with Emil Ruusuvuori to compete in mixed doubles, but the duo lost in the first round.
Kontaveit retired from the sport after the 2023 Wimbledon Championships due to a lumbar disc degeneration diagnosis, which made it hard for her to train and compete on the tour. Since then, the Estonian has diverted her attention to other aspects of life and has now started a family. She took to Instagram in May 2024 to announce her pregnancy and shared a few more snippets of her maternity journey.
On September 16, Kontaveit introduced the world to her baby boy, Leon Enzo Lepistu, with an adorable post on Instagram. Leon, now a week old, is pictured sleeping while holding the finger of his father and Kontaveit's boyfriend, Brent Lepistu.
"First week with our Leon Enzo Lepistu ❤️ So much love 🥰" the post was captioned.
Brent Lepistu is a professional soccer player from Estonia. The 31-year-old is a midfielder and has played for his nation at the international level. He currently competes for FCI Levadia in the Meistriliiga, the highest tier of Estonian club football.
With the arrival of Leon, Anett Kontaveit has become part of the WTA baby boom, with several high-profile players becoming mothers in 2024. Belinda Bencic welcomed her daughter, Bella, in April. Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova and Alison Riske-Amritraj welcomed Petr and Calen in July. Sabine Lisicki announced the birth of her first daughter, coincidentally also named Bella, on September 8.
Anett Kontaveit retired with six WTA Tour titles
Anett Kontaveit is the most successful player in Estonian tennis history. She won six WTA Tour level titles in her 13-year-long career and rose to become the World No. 2, the highest ranking of any Estonian player ever. Kontaveit won her first title at the 2017 Rosmalen Open.
However, it was at the 2018 Wuhan Open that she truly announced herself on the WTA Tour. Kontaveit reached her maiden WTA 1000 final at the tournament and finished as runners-up to Aryna Sabalenka. Her next four titles came within the span of seven tournaments in 2021.
Kontaveit emerged victorious at the WTA 250 Tennis in Cleveland, WTA 500 Ostrava Open, WTA 500 Kremlin Cup, and WTA 250 Transylvania Open and, as a result, qualified for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. She continued her superb form at the year-end championships as well and reached the finals.
Kontaveit's dream run was ended by Garbine Muguruza. Kontaveit also finished runners-up at the 2022 WTA 1000 Qatar Open. A run of injuries halted her progress, and a year later, she drew curtains on her career.
