French tennis player Arthur Fils won $615,000 on Friday (October 24) for scoring the most ATP 500 points in this 2024 season. The 20-year-old currently has a tally of 1400 points, 670 points more than the second-placed Jannik Sinner (1330).
Fils secured this feat after his latest ATP 500 win at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. He beat Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The first set of the match went to a tiebreak with both the players giving it their all for an early advantage. However, the Frenchman showed immense composure to take the win in the tiebreaker and clinch the first set 6-7 (7).
Fils dominated Tsitsipas in the second set of the match, convincingly beating him 6-3 to win the match. Here's what he said after the match (via Daily Express):
"I think I served pretty well. I am very happy with how I dealt with the tie-break. And I think I played pretty good in the second set as well."
After the match point, Fils was also seen making a gesture of money referring to the bonus he will receive for his heroics at the ATP 500 events. He was also heard saying 'money' along with the hand gesture immediately after his victory over the Greek.
Fils, 20, has participated in six ATP 500 events this season, securing two wins in Hamburg and Tokyo. His only early exit in the ATP 500 tournaments came at the 2024 Rio Open. The youngster lost to Brazil's Joao Fonseca 0-6, 4-6 in the first round of the tournament.
Following his win over Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal of the Swiss Indoors, he will now face World No. 17 Ben Shelton in the semifinal on Saturday (October 26).
Arthur Fils faced a first-round exit at the 2024 Shanghai Masters
Arthur Fils faced a defeat against World No. 53 Roberto Carballes in the first round of the 2024 Shanghai Masters. This came just five days after his impressive victory against Ugo Humbert at the Japan Open.
Carballes beat the French player in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). Fils produced an error-laden display on the day, committing 19 unforced errors and two double faults.
Fils has had a disappointing 2024 ATP 1000 season, failing to progress beyond the quarterfinals in any of the eight tournaments he has entered.
