Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will face her good friend Paula Badosa in the semifinals of the Australian Open on Thursday, January 23. The World No. 1 commenced her title defense with wins over Sloane Stephens, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Clara Tauson, and Mirra Andreeva.
Sabalenka progressed to the last eight without losing a set, and took on 27th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a spot in the last four. The Belarusian survived a spirited challenge from her older rival to beat her 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in nearly two hours. She extended her winning streak to 10 matches this year, as well as to 19 matches at the Australian Open.
Badosa defeated Wang Xinyu, Talia Gibson, Marta Kostyuk, and Olga Danilovic to reach the quarterfinals, where she was up against World No. 3 Coco Gauff. The latter was on a nine-match winning streak but the Spaniard executed her game plan perfectly to score a 7-5, 6-4 win. She has now advanced to her maiden Major semifinal.
Sabalenka leads Badosa 5-2 in their rivalry and has won their last five matches. The former won their most recent encounter at the French Open 2024 and hasn't lost to the latter since the WTA Finals 2021. The Belarusian is gunning to become the first player since Martina Hingis to sweep three titles on the trot in Melbourne.
Sabalenka romped to the title in impressive form last year and didn't lose a single set. Her level this year hasn't been the same but she remains a cut above her rivals. She has also reached the final of the last four hardcourt Majors and has a combined 32-1 record at the Australian Open and the US Open since 2023.
The two have played some close matches in the past, and with a spot in the championship round up for grabs, both players are sure to put their best foot forward. On that note, here are the details on how to keep up with their upcoming showdown:
