ATP rankings update: Carlos Alcaraz dethrones Novak Djokovic as World No. 1, Daniil Medvedev climbs to World No. 2

Carlos Alcaraz suffered an early exit at the Italian Open last week, but that didn't stop him from returning to the top of the ATP rankings.

The Spaniard was the second seed at the tournament and reached the third round after defeating compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-4, 6-1. That was enough to ensure that he would reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic was the defending champion at the Italian Open but was eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to eventual runner-up Holger Rune. Djokovic's inability to defend his title, coupled with Daniil Medvedev's strong result, saw the Serb drop two places to third.

Medvedev, who had zero wins at the Italian Open while entering this year's tournament, ended up winning it by beating Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5 in the final. The Russian's triumph saw him rise up a spot to second in the ATP rankings; he currently has 6330 points, 485 points behind Alcaraz.

Holger Rune's run to the final of the Italian Open saw him attain a career-best ranking of sixth, while Andrey Rublev dropped a spot to seventh.

Rafael Nadal drops to 15th in the ATP rankings

Rafael Nadal went from 14th to 15th in the ATP rankings as he was unable to defend his points from last year's Italian Open. The Spaniard is set to suffer a huge drop next month; he will fall out of the top 100 as his withdrawal from the French Open renders him unable to defend the 2000 points he won last year.

Hubert Hurkacz rose two spots to 13th in the rankings while Cameron Norrie dropped to 14th. Elsewhere in the top 20, Lorenzo Musetti rose to 18th while Alex de Minaur dropped to 19th.

Alexander Zverev suffered a Round-of-16 exit at the Italian Open, and was thus unable to defend his semifinal points from 2022. He dropped five spots down to 27th, with Jan-Lennard Struff replacing him as the German No. 1 at 26th.

Andy Murray moved a spot up to 41st while Dominic Thiem rose to 91st. Stan Wawrinka, however, dropped four spots down to 88th.

Christopher Eubanks' performances on the ATP Challenger tour saw him attain a career-high ranking of 75th. Yannick Hanfmann was the biggest mover in the top 100 as his quarterfinal run at the Italian Open saw him rise 37 spots up to a career-best 64th in the ATP rankings.
