The world's top players will assemble in Melbourne for the season's first Major, the Australian Open, starting on January 12. The qualifying rounds for the same kicked off on January 6. Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, both top-ranked players in the world, are the defending champions in singles.
After winning his first Grand Slam title here last year, Sinner will attempt to mount a successful title defense. His triumph in Melbourne was the start of his domination in 2024. He won eight titles, including his second Major crown at the US Open, and posted a 73-6 record with 18 wins over top 10 players.
Sinner's closest rival, Carlos Alcaraz, will attempt to make history by becoming the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam. Having won the other three Majors, the Australian Open remains the only missing piece. The Spaniard isn't the only one looking to rewrite tennis history.
Novak Djokovic will be gunning to claim a record 25th Major title, his 11th in Melbourne as well as the 100th of his career. His quest for the same proved futile last year, and he will be more determined than ever to get over the hump this year.
Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz both lost Major finals last year and will aim to win their first Major title in Melbourne in a couple of weeks. Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas are among other notable names seeking their maiden Grand Slam title as well.
Daniil Medvedev, thrice a runner-up at the Australian Open, will be eager to finally lift the winner's trophy this time. His last two losses were heartbreaking as he blew two-set leads in the 2022 and 2024 finals, going down to Rafael Nadal and Sinner, respectively.
Sabalenka, meanwhile, will be aiming to win her third title on the trot in Melbourne Park. She won the Brisbane International over the weekend and improved her record to 27-1 in Australia since the start of 2023. Martina Hingis was the last player to claim a trio of titles in succession when she achieved the feat between 1997 and 1999.
Coco Gauff has been on a roll since last fall. She won the China Open and the WTA Finals and started the new season with a victory at the United Cup. A semifinalist here last year, she will be keen to go all the way this time. Iga Swiatek, Zheng Qinwen, and Elena Rybakina are the other top contenders on the women's side.
With the who's who of tennis gathered in one place, the next fortnight promises to be an exciting one. On that note, here are the broadcast details for this year's edition of the Australian Open:
