Ben Shelton's sister, Emma, gave him a shoutout following his second-round victory at the 2025 Australian Open. The 22-year-old is aiming for his first Major in just his third year as a professional athlete.
Shelton had a solid 2024 season, winning his second ATP title in Houston. He’s shown great promise in Australia before, making it to the quarterfinals in 2023 before being defeated by Tommy Paul.
This year, the American kicked off his campaign on a strong note as well, meeting Brandon Nakashima in the first round. He took the effort and beat his fellow American 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the second round.
Ben Shelton met Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round, and their match stretched to four sets, with the former eventually securing a 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory. Afterwards, his sister Emma took to her Instagram Stories to acknowledge his win.
Emma Shelton, also a tennis player, may not yet be as popular as her brother, but she has shown great promise in college tennis. If things go well, more success seems to be on the horizon for her.
Ben Shelton to take on Lorenzo Musetti in Australian Open 2025 3R
Ben Shelton faced a tough challenge in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open, overcoming Pablo Carreno Busta in a four-set battle. Reflecting on the match, Shelton admitted that he wouldn’t have relished facing the Spaniard during his prime.
He said during a press conference after his win:
"From a player like him, I learned that I wouldn't have liked to see him when he was at his 'peak'. I'm not saying he can't return to his best level, today he showed some aspects that made the match very complicated."
"I was a child when I watched him in the semifinals and quarterfinals of Grand Slam tournaments from my living room couch, and today I had some flashbacks," the American added.
Shelton faces an even tougher challenge ahead, as he’s set to take on Paris Olympics bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian is coming off two impressive victories over Matteo Arnaldi and Denis Shapovalov, making him a formidable opponent.
Shelton and Musetti have faced off twice on the ATP Tour before, with the latter winning both encounters. The first came at Queen's Club in 2023, followed by another victory at the 2024 Miami Masters.
