Ben Shelton's sister, Emma, has reacted to the 22-year-old's fifth victory over a top-10 player on the ATP Tour after his win against Andrey Rublev at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The Sheltons are a family of athletes: Ben's father and current coach, Bryan, played on the ATP Tour and reached a career-high ranking of No. 55, while his mother, Lisa Witsken Shelton, played junior tennis. His sister, Emma, also played college tennis like Ben, but she did not turn professional.
At the 2024 Swiss Indoors Basel, Ben began his campaign by defeating Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the first round, followed by a victory over home favorite Stan Wawrinka in the second round, setting up a clash with Andrey Rublev. This was the first meeting between Shelton and Rublev on the ATP Tour, marking Shelton's debut appearance at the tournament since turning pro.
Following his win over Rublev, Shelton's sister, Emma shared a video on her Instagram story featuring highlights from the match and a Tennis TV graphic celebrating his fifth career victory over a top-10 player.
“Lets gooooo,” she captioned along with a fire emoji.
Ben's first win over a top-10 player came in 2022 when he defeated then-World No. 5 Casper Ruud in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. His second top-10 victory was against Frances Tiafoe, ranked No. 10 at the time, in the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open. The following month, he secured another win by beating then-World No. 4 Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of the 2023 Shanghai Masters.
Shelton's victory over Rublev on Friday marked his second top-10 win of the 2024 season, after defeating the World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the round-robin stage of the 2024 Laver Cup.
Ben Shelton's sister Emma shared a childhood throwback video of outplaying him, in celebration of his birthday
Ben Shelton turned 22 on 9 October, and in celebration, his older sister Emma shared a series of pictures and videos featuring the two of them on her Instagram. One video showed them playing tennis when they were much younger, with Emma hitting the ball past Ben. He then quickly composed himself after noticing their dad was watching.
"Hope the vibes on court are this good always," she wrote on the video. “The casual get up when he remembers Dads watching”
"Happy 22nd birthday to a young legend," she captioned a collage of pictures.
Ben then reposted the image and hilariously captioned it:
“hahaha caught in 4k"
The World No. 23, currently competing at the Swiss Indoors, will face Arthur Fils in the semifinal on Saturday (October 26). Their head-to-head record is currently tied at 1-1.
