21st seed Ben Shelton will take on Gael Monfils in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The winner of the match will face either Lorenzo Sonego or Learner Tien in the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Major.
Shelton entered the tournament after losing his first match of the 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The 22-year-old started his campaign in Melbourne after beating compatriot Brandon Nakashima 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-5. He followed this up with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 win to set up a third-round clash with 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Shelton won the opening set 6-3 before the Italian leveled things up after winning the second by the same scoreline. The American, however, did well to fight off the threat from Musetti and win 6-3, 3-6, 7-4, 7-6(5).
Monfils entered the Australian Open after winning the ASB Classic in Auckland and started by edging out 30th seed Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-7(5), 6-4. The 38-year-old then registered a 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Daniel Altmaier to set up a third-round clash against fourth seed Taylor Fritz.
Here, Monfils scripted one of the upsets of the tournament, as he came back from a set down to beat the American 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), 6-4 to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2022 Australian Open.
Shelton and Monfils will lock horns for the very first time, and the American will reach his third Grand Slam quarterfinal if he wins. Monnfils, meanwhile, will reach the last eight of the Australian Open for the third time if he comes out on top.
