Bernard Tomic finds himself mired in yet another controverial situation after being kicked out of an ATP Challenger Tour-level final, despite not playing in it himself. The former World No. 17's attendance in the final stemmed reportedly out of personal animosity for Ecuador's Andres Andrade, who reached the final after beating Tomic in the quarterfinals.
Now, shocking details have been revealed, which, if verified by tennis authorities, may have serious consequences for the Aussie.
31-year-old Bernard Tomic was once seen as a prodigious talent and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2011. However, he has also had a penchant for stirring controversy, and in recent years, while his form and ranking have drastically dipped, his involvement in controversial incidents has continued.
The latest instance came to light on Monday, August 19, when Tomic attended the final of the Santo Domingo Challenger in the Dominican Republic. The Australian incessantly heckled Andrade and was eventually thrown out by security after the crowd voiced their protest at Tomic's behavior. Andrade would eventually go on to lose the final to Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur.
Recently, Luis Fernando Amador, one of Andrade's close friends who also attended the final, laid bare startling details of the controversy. According to Amador, Bernard Tomic's frustrations initially boiled over during his quarterfinal loss to the Ecuadorian.
However, Amador claimed on KC Tenis (as reported by CLAY), a radio show, that the Aussie didn't stop there, and went on to take a condescending swipe at Andrade and also threatened to gang up on him with his associates.
"I met Andy (Andrade) after the match and he said ‘Tomic is crazy. In the locker room he started insulting me and saying worse things than what he said on the court. After the match, Tomic began to insult him in English and told Andy ‘you’re a cheater, you’re a bad person. Now that you’re into the semi-finals you’re going to have seven thousand dollars… I have 700 thousand‘; then he warned that he was going to arrive at the next match with 30 people," Amador told KC Tenis.
Nick Kyrgios reacted to compatriot Bernard Tomic's controversial behavior during Santo Domingo Challenger final

Nick Kyrgios, a former World No. 13 and another controversial figure in contemporary tennis, took notice of Tomic's actions and proceeded to deliver his reaction to it on X (formerly Twitter). The 2022 Wimbledon Championships finalist though, was amused by his compatriot's behavior, expressing it via a reply to Luke Saville's (Daria Saville's husband) reaction.
"Unreal stuff hahaha," Kyrgios wrote in his reply to Luke Saville.
Right now, Bernard Tomic finds himself ranked at a lowly World No. 237, a far cry from his days as the World No. 17 and as a junior, during which he won an Orange Bowl title and two junior Grand Slam singles titles.
