Alexander Zverev was recently transported back to an unforgettable experience with Roger Federer at the Qatar Open gala.
In 2019, Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer teamed up for a five-country exhibition tour in Latin America. While their match in Colombia was canceled due to unfortunate circumstances, the German-speaking pair had the time of their lives during their exhibitions in Chile, Argentina, Mexico and Ecuador.
Alexander Zverev, who is currently in Doha to contest the 2023 Qatar Open, attended the gala night ahead of the tournament, where one of the performers sang the song “Dance Monkey” by Australian singer Tones and I, one of the biggest hits of 2019. Listening to the song, the German tennis player was quickly reminded of his magical days in Latin America from 2019.
Zverev, who also had his best mate – former doubles World No. 1 Marcelo Melo accompany them on the tour, revisited the memories from that trip with the duo on social media.
“Roger Federer, Marcelo Melo, does this song remind you of something guys?” he asked after posting a video of the musical performance in Qatar.
Melo responded with more pictures from the tour.
“The best trip I ever did – South American tour,” Marcelo Melo responded.
During their match in Mexico, which was dubbed as “The Greatest Match” and saw a record-setting audience of 42,517, Roger Federer entertained the crowd by grooving to Dance Monkey.
The song was certainly a memorable part of their trip as Zverev and Melo recreated it days later.
Back in 2019, Federer thanked all the fans for the unprecedented turnout after the event.
“An absolute magical evening in Mexico City. Gracias to all 42’517 people that came to set a new world record,” the Swiss legend had said.
The German similarly echoed the former World No. 1's sentiments.
“It was the experience of a lifetime,” the 25-year-old had said.
Rafael Nadal believes Alexander Zverev can make a stunning comeback after unfortunate injury in 2022
Alexander Zverev did not have the best of years on tour in 2022. The German player, who seemed to have a real chance against French Open’s most successful athlete Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the tournament in 2022, faced a freak ankle injury mid-match that left him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.
The player is now back in action, and Rafael Nadal believes that the German will lift the most Masters 1000 titles this year.
"I think he had a very tough 2022 after the injury he had and I've always been a believer that when you come back from a tough period of time, you are able to win a couple of matches and then you have an incredible power," Nadal said.
Expectedly, the 25-year-old hasn’t had an ideal start to 2023, losing five of the eight matches contested, including a second-round loss at the Australian Open. He will now compete in the Qatar Open, where he is the fourth seed and has received a bye in the first round. The 25-year-old awaits the winner of Andy Murray vs Lorenzo Sonego for a spot in the quarterfinals.
