Bianca Andreescu crashing out in the opening round of the 2024 Japan Women's Open has sparked discussions among tennis fans. Many of them have expressed their disappointment with the 2019 US Open champion's recent performances.
After being sidelined with a back injury for nearly 10 months, Andreescu made her return to the tour at the French Open this year. Though she made some impressive runs initially, including a run to the final at the Libema Open, the 24-year-old has struggled to maintain her level.
During the North American hard-court swing, she faced opening-round exits at the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open, and the US Open.
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Canadian as she was decimated 6-3,6-0 by Greet Minnen in the opening round of the Japan Women's Open.
Fans were disappointed with Bianca Andreescu's performance with many feeling that she stopped putting the effort to make a comeback in the second set.
One fan felt that the Canadian had stopped trying to improve her game and claimed that Emma Raducanu was following in her footsteps, seemingly alluding to how the Brit also lost her form after winning a Major early in her career.
"I don’t think Andreescu spends a single minute of her time practicing tennis anymore. She is the blueprint Raducanu fallowed," the fan commented.
Another fan said that they were 'disgusted' with how Andreescu had stopped putting in effort.
"osorio and andreescu is being put in my shitlist from now on officially. i can understand to lose a match but im always disgusted by the lack of effort from a player in the match," the fan said.
Another fan quipped how Bianca Andreescu and Sofia Kenin were engaged in a 'battle of mid'.
"Andreescu and Kenin competing to be the worst one Slam / season wonder," the fan joked.
Here are some more fans reacting to Bianca Andreescu's early exit:
"Andreescu, just giving up for no reason on the 2nd set, probably injured but idk," a fan pondered.
"Andreescu just lost to Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-0… ik this is just her first match since the USO but a rather surprising score line for the slam champ. will she ever win another big title in her career?" a fan questioned.
"Really hard to watch. It’s hurt… But I still believe and know she will come back to her best level. Stay strong Bibi. Always with you, good or bad moments. @Bandreescu_," a fan said.
One of the fans also wrote how two young and once-promising Canadians, Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov, have become a shadow of their former selves.
"It's a real shame what happened to both Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu. So much promise and they're both utterly irrelevant on their respective tours by the age of 25," a fan mentioned.
"I used to live watching Andreescu because of her variety but now she just looks like she's disorganized...no thought behind her point construction," a fan commented.
Bianca Andreescu will be a part of Canada's squad for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals
Bianca Andreescu is set to don the Canadian colors once again at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. She missed out on the tournament last year due to her injury but did congratulate her friends on their historic triumph.
A regular at the event, Andreescu boasts an impressive 8-4 record in singles and a 3-0 record in doubles. She made her Billie Jean King Cup debut in 2017.
Bianca Andreescu will be joined by Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Marina Stakusic, and Gabriela Dabrowski. The women will be captained by Heidi El Tabakh.
