When Bjorn Borg opened up about his early retirement from tennis

In an interview in September 2024 with The Athletic, Bjorn Borg reflected on the reason behind his early retirement from the sport. He revealed that he did not feel motivated to continue playing tennis. He said that while he was happy as a player, he did not have the focus that was required.

Borg said,

"I was very happy as a player, but the motivation was not there. If you don’t have the motivation to practice and compete every day, you can’t focus on what you do and what you need to do. I was happy, but I had no motivation and no focus. When I came back briefly, that was a different story."

He added,

"I’m writing a book. I’m going to tell everyone all about it next year."

Bjorn Borg was one of the best players of his time, and he won his first Grand Slam title, the French Open, in 1974, at the age of 18. The former tennis player won 64 singles titles and 4 doubles titles during his career, playing during the era of players such as John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, and Ilie Nastase. He was also the first male player in the Open Era to win 11 Grand Slam titles, doing so between 1974 and 1981.
