Boris Becker marveled at Stan Wawrinka after the Swiss broke his compatriot Roger Federer's record at their home tournament, the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The 39-year-old defeated Adrian Mannarino in a topsy-turvy three-set thriller to kick off his campaign.

The Swizz came into his home tournament on the back of an underwhelming 2024 season, where he registered a disappointing 9-15 win/loss record. However, he seemed to have found his mojo back at the Stockholm Open, where he reached the semifinals and took that form into Basel.

The 39-year-old entered the tournament after receiving a main draw wildcard but was dealt with Adrian Mannarino, a player who had a 3-0 lead against him, in the opening round. However, a resilient Wawrinka ousted the Frenchman 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in emphatic fashion and let out a huge roar to celebrate his win.

This win also helped Wawrinka become the oldest man to win a match at the Swiss Indoors, breaking his compatriot Roger Federer's record.

Boris Becker took to X (formerly Twitter) to hail Stan Wawrinka as the 'Man', a reference to his popular nickname 'Stan the Man'.

"Stan is the Man," Becker tweeted.

Roger Federer's last win at the Swiss Indoors came at the age of 38 in 2019, when he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets to clinch his 10th title at the event. In 2020 and 2021, the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, and by the time the tournament returned in 2022, the Swiss had hung up his racket.

Stan Wawrinka has enjoyed an illustrious career, which includes three Grand Slams. However, it is no secret that he has been far from his best in recent years, and many have questioned if the 39-year-old may call it quits soon.

During a recent interview with SpilXperten after ousting Brandon Nakashima at the 2024 Stockholm Open, the Swiss stated that he had no plans to retire as he still possessed the competitive fire.

"I have never said that I am making any decision to retire myself from tennis this year. I've said I'm getting older, and of course I'm near the end, but I'm still playing well and I'm competitive when I play."

The Swiss said that he still found joy in playing, and as long as that joy existed, he planned on continuing.

"I enjoy what I do and I enjoy waking up and going to training and still having the opportunity to play in such a nice tournament like this. As long as I enjoy it, I will continue to push myself a little bit."

The former World No. 3 talked about how he found the motivation to continue his career because of his love for tennis.

Stan Wawrinka will play sixth seed Ben Shelton in the second round of the Swiss Indoors. This will be the first meeting between the two men and the winner will face top seed Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.
