Boris Becker has reacted to Formula One legend Lewis Hamilton's farewell note for longtime competitor Daniel Ricciardo, who was recently axed from Red Bull-owned RB. Hamilton lauded Ricciardo via his heartfelt farewell note and assured the Aussie that he would always remain in his corner.
On Thursday, September 26, Red Bull confirmed that Liam Lawson would be taking Daniel Ricciardo's place in the RB team for the remainder of the 2024 Formula One season. There already were rumors ahead of the official confirmation that Ricciardo would not be a part of RB for much longer. These rumors stemmed from the Aussie's emotional interviews after the conclusion of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo's first stint with Red Bull saw him winning seven races between 2014 and 2018. The 35-year-old also won the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. At the time, he was a part of the McLaren team. Now that RB has decided to replace him, it is quite likely that the Aussie's Formula One career is done and dusted.
Several prominent Formula One names poured in with their tributes to the decorated Ricciardo, and Lewis Hamilton was among them. The Brit took to Instagram and shared several pictures that reflected the depth of the friendship between the two competitors. Hamilton also wrote a long message.
"@danielricciardo it’s been a honour to compete with you over the years. I’ll never forget the battles, the laughs, and drinking out of your shoe 🤢 It was gross, but glad I got to do it with you bud," Hamilton wrote.
"You leave a legacy of always being yourself, which in this sport is never easy. You’ve taken it all with the biggest smile and I salute you for it. There is so much more for you up ahead and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Always here for you, man," Hamilton added.
Former World No. 1 and six-time singles Major winner Boris Becker saw the seven-time Formula One World Drivers' Championship winner's post and reacted with a one-word message.
"Word," Becker wrote in the comments section of Hamilton's post.
Earlier this year, Hamilton had opened up about the lessons he learned after talking to Boris Becker and other legendary sports personalities.
Lewis Hamilton spoke up about how talking to Boris Becker and others taught him how to look forward to his post-Formula One life
Hamilton sat down for an interview with GQ earlier this year and laid bare how talking to Boris Becker, Serena Williams and Michael Jordan was an eye-opener for him. According to Hamilton, talking to such figures helped him to explore his passions beyond Formula One to prepare for life after his career comes to an end.
"I’d spoken to so many amazing athletes, from Boris Becker to Serena Williams, even Michael Jordan. Talking to greats that I’ve met along the way, who are retired—or some that are still in competition—and the fear of what’s next, the lack of preparation for what’s next," Hamilton told GQ.
"A lot of them said: ‘I stopped too early.’ Or: ‘Stayed too long.’ ‘When it ended, I didn’t have anything planned.’ ‘My whole world came crashing down because my whole life has been about that sport. When I stop, how do I avoid that? And so I got serious about finding other things that I was passionate about," Hamilton added.
Boris Becker, meanwhile, was last seen attending the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin, where Team Europe triumphed over Team World courtesy Carlos Alcaraz's heroics.
