The Paris Olympics 2024 tennis draw has been revealed and a blockbuster potential second-round match has been set up between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Although the pair has to cross their respective first-round barriers, fans have already started to pick sides as the potential clash looms.
The draw for the tennis event was revealed on Thursday, July 25. While there are multiple mouthwatering clashes in the first round, a potential second-round clash between Spain's Nadal and Serbia's Djokovic sent shockwaves across social media.
A tennis-related X (formerly Twitter) account posted about the possible clash which boasts players with a combined total of 46 singles Grand Slam titles. They wrote:
"OH MY GOD: Djokovic vs Nadal possible ROUND 2 🥇🚨"
Fans were excited and quick to pick sides.
"Bring me his head. You have to my honey sugarplum baldie," one fan declared.
"I want Djokovic to thrash Nadal at Roland Garros one last time," another fan wished.
"This is being hyped up a lot but even as a Rafa stan I know that this will be an easy win for Djokovic in Rafa's current condition 😭 if Rafa can even beat Fucsovic," a third fan wrote (translated from German).
Here are some more fan reactions to the potential second-round clash.
"I need Nole to beat that fraud like his entire career depends on it," one fan wrote.
"The universe bringing my deepest desires into manifestation," another fan wrote.
"Both are finished but the fact that it is played on clay favors Nadal, so Nadal will win the last Djokovic-Nadal," a fan claimed (translated from Spanish).
Nadal and Djokovic have faced each other on tour 59 times with the Serb holding a slender lead of 30-29. Their last clash was over two years ago at the 2022 French Open in the quarterfinal. The Spaniard won the match and went on to win the title as well.
If Nadal and Djokovic defeat their first-round opponents, they can run it back on the same court as the Roland Garros grounds are hosting the tennis event at the Olympics this year.
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal's Paris Olympics 2024 1R opponents
Serbia's Novak Djokovic will face Australia's Matthew Ebden in the first round of the Paris Olympics 2024. Ebden is a doubles specialist and rarely plays singles. He replaced Rinky Hijikata in the singles event and has been drawn against the top seed.
Meanwhile, Spain's Rafael Nadal will take Hungary's Marton Fucsovics. This will be the first time the pair faces each other on tour.
A win for the two-time Olympics gold medallist against Fucsovics along with a win for the Serb over the Aussie could see them face off for the second time in an Olympics event. They last faced off at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the Spaniard coming out on top in the semifinal 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
