Carlos Alcaraz couldn’t help but smile when asked about his biceps in the post-match chat after his win against Yoshihito Nishioka in the 2025 Australian Open on Wednesday, January 15. Alcaraz was in scintillating shape as he needed just 81 minutes to snap up a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 win against the unseeded Japanese to storm into the third round of the Melbourne Major.
The third-seeded Spaniard was at his best on the court, serving 14 aces, and made a stylish statement by donning a teal-cloured sleeveless T-shirt that showed off his muscular frame. Asked about whether his biceps had become bigger over the off-season, Alcaraz said drawing a roar of laughter from the packed stands at the Margaret Court Arena:
“I think my fitness coach would be happy with my biceps. A lot of people told me about it, that your biceps (are big) and okay, I’m just happy to hear that.” [01:47]
Alcaraz also joked he had put in “just a few more” mirrors in his house to admire his physique. His biceps have often been a talking point in the tennis world, with Nick Kyrgios famously calling his arms “sensational” during last year’s US Open. The 21-year-old Spaniard is widely regarded as among the fittest players on the circuit and his incredible levels of agility and recovery are big weapons in his arsenal.
Carlos Alcaraz to face Nuno Borges in Australian Open 3R
Having made light work of Yoshihito Nishioka, Carlos Alcaraz will next face Nuno Borges of Portugal in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday, January 17. Borges caused an upset in the men’s draw as he beat 27th seed and local hope Jordan Thompson in straight sets.
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head record as he won the only previous encounter. The former World No.1 had beaten Borges 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 32 at the 2023 Barcelona Open. Alcaraz beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to clinch the title.
The Australian Open holds great significance for Alcaraz since it’s the only Grand Slam title he has not won yet. He has won Wimbledon twice and the US Open and French Open, but has not tasted success at Melbourne Park yet. Should he win the 2025 Australian Open, he will become the youngest men’s player to complete a Career Grand Slam.
