Madrid Open director and former World No. 12 Feliciano Lopez recently heaped praise on compatriot Carlos Alcaraz for his remarkable achievements at such a young age.
Carlos Alcaraz's status as the most impressive rising star in tennis was cemented by his triumph over Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to win his second Masters title at the 2022 Madrid Open. Moreover, his first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open and the World No. 1 ranking propelled him to even greater heights.
Adding to his list of achievements, the Spaniard won his third Masters 1000 title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March 2023.
In an interview with Eurosport, Feliciano Lopez hailed Carlos Alcaraz as the best possible representative for their country.
"He represents Spain in the best way around the world," Lopez said.
Lopez labeled Alcaraz a "chosen one" for his impressive feat of winning a Grand Slam title and reaching the World No. 1 ranking at the age of 19. The 41-year-old also lauded the teenager's charisma and strong values.
"He is a chosen one, someone with charisma who reaches number 1 at the age of 19, winning a Grand Slam and who has very good values and transmits joy," he added.
The former World No. 12 praised the 19-year-old's success during the 2023 season on his comeback from injury. He picked Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal to achieve favorable results during the clay season.
"He is in an impressive moment and it is not easy to come back from various injuries and win two titles in an ATP 250 and a Masters 1000, being a finalist in an ATP 500 and a semifinalist in another Masters 1000. I trust that he and Rafa will do well in the next tournaments," Lopez stated.
Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the players I like the most: Feliciano Lopez
In the same interview, Feliciano Lopez named Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas as his favorite players on the tour. The Spaniard deemed Alcaraz and Sinner to be the ones to "lead world tennis in the future."
"Carlitos, Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is a little older, are the tennis players I like the most. Carlos and Jannik, whose confrontations are extremely tough, will be the ones who will lead world tennis in the future," he said.
The Madrid Open director also expressed his desire to see a rematch between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic at the Masters event. With players like Nadal and Casper Ruud also expected to do well on clay, Lopez maintained that there was no clear favorite for the 2023 clay season.
"Hopefully Carlos will play with Djokovic again in Madrid and we will also have Rafa, who if he is healthy, will surely fight again for the big titles, and players like Casper Ruud, who made a lot of progress last year. In 2023 there is no clear favorite on clay," he added.
