Carlos Alcaraz earned the plaudits of Boris Becker for confidently calling the shots on day 3 of the Laver Cup to clinch the title. After the conclusion of the play on day 2, Team World led Team Europe 8-4.
Day 3 started with Alcaraz and Ruud defeating Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton to reduce the deficit. But they faced yet another setback as Shelton defeated Daniil Medvedev to reduce Europe's lead. Team World was just one win away from winning the title, but Alexander Zverev produced a splendid performance against Frances Tiafoe to keep their title hopes alive.
The final match of the tournament served as the ultimate decider as the best players on both teams took the court in search of the title. The Spaniard overpowered Taylor Fritz to snatch the victory for Team Europe and provided a fitting farewell to the departing captain Bjorn Borg.
After the dramatic win, Zverev claimed Alacarz called the shots behind the scenes. The German said the 21-year-old showed a lot of trust in him ahead of the high-stakes match against Tiafoe.
"At midnight we decided who would play on Sunday. Carlos decided he would play doubles with Ruud. Told us Medvedev would face Shelton and that I would not lose to Tiafoe. He had more confidence on me than I've ever had on myself," Zverev said.
Boris Becker was impressed with Alcaraz's decision-making and took to X to lavish praise on the Spaniard.
"Good decision from Carlos," Becker said.
Boris Becker made an appearance at the Laver Cup, where he was seen chatting with Andre Agassi.
