Carlos Alcaraz missed out on the 2024 Italian Open due to an injury. His French Open participation has also been in doubt since his withdrawal from Rome but the Spaniard's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero has provided a positive update about him.
Alcaraz has been facing a muscle issue in his right forearm throughout this claycourt season. He was scheduled to face Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Monte Carlo Masters on April 10 but pulled out of the tournament due to the injury.
He recovered just enough to be back for the Madrid Open and begin his campaign at his home tournament on April 26. On May 1, he faced defeat in the quarterfinal against eventual winner Andrey Rublev 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.
Injury concerns surrounded the Spaniard throughout his time in Madrid but he did not pull out at any moment. Before the Italian Open, however, Alcaraz announced that he would be withdrawing from the tournament in Rome to mend his forearm injury.
“I felt some pain after playing in Madrid, some discomfort in my arm. Today I did some tests and I have a muscle edema in my pronator teres, a consequence of my recent injury,” Alcaraz wrote on X.
“Unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome. I need to rest so I can recover and play 100% pain free.”
Just days before the 2024 French Open begins, Carlos Alcaraz's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero posted a video of him training at Ferrero's academy. Alcaraz was looking sharp in training but he was still wearing protective gear on his right arm.
"These days @carlitosalcarazz is working hard 🔥on trying to recover in order to be ready for the upcoming tournaments! 🎾 Vamos Carlitos, tú puedes," Ferrero captioned the video.
Carlos Alcaraz will reportedly reach Paris for the French Open 2024 by May 22
Reports about Carlos Alcaraz's recovery have been positive. A recent report from MARCA states that Alcaraz returned to racquet training this Monday in preparation for the upcoming French Open.
Further, MARCA reported that Alcaraz's team has drawn up a roadmap for the Spaniard similar to the one he followed last year. The World No. 3 will travel to Paris on Wednesday, May 22, and stay in a hotel next to the Champs Elysées.
The 21-year-old has participated in the French Open main draw thrice, each year since 2021. He has seen progress every year after a third-round elimination in 2021, a quarterfinal appearance in 2022, and a semifinal run last year.
