Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have created a new record as the under-23 duo became the first since Pete Sampras and Jim Courier in 1993 to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon in the same year. The youngsters have been in scintillating form throughout the season, and have been no different at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
While Alcaraz had already tasted Grand Slam success and reached the World No. 1 in 2022, Sinner was yet to see any of the glory. However, as Alcaraz won his second Major at Wimbledon last year, the Italian turned things around in the latter half of the 2023 season and has been going strong since.
In 2024, Sinner won his first Major at the Australian Open, defeating Daniil Medvedev in an enthralling five-set thriller. The Spaniard, on the other hand, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Alexander Zverev.
Heading to the clay season, Sinner's consistency helped him become the 29th player in history to reach the top of the ATP rankings at the French Open. The duo had super runs that culminated in their ninth meeting where Alcaraz prevailed and went on to win La Coupe de Mousquetaires.
Currently competing at Wimbledon, the two young men have been in fine touch. Jannik Sinner, the top seed, defeated Yannick Hanfmann in the opening round and passed the Matteo Berrettini test in the second. He then ousted Miomir Kecmanovic, following it up with a win against Ben Shelton to reach the quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz, the third seed and the defending champion, kicked off his campaign with a win against Mark Lajal before defeating Aleksandar Vukic. He then survived a five-setter against Frances Tiafoe before eliminating Ugo Humbert to reach the Final 8.
Sinner, 22, and Alcaraz, 21, have become only the second under-23 duo in the Open Era to reach the quarterfinals of the first three Grand Slams in a calendar year after the pair of Pete Sampras and Jim Courier, who achieved the feat in 1993.
Carlos Alcaraz will play Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals, Jannik Sinner awaits Daniil Medvedev
Carlos Alcaraz will take on 12th seed Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Paul won the Queen's Club Championships and has maintained his form in SW19, defeating Pedro Martinez, Otto Virtanen, Alexander Bublik, and Roberto Bautista Agut en route to the Final 8.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two men, with both sharing two wins each.
On the other hand, Jannik Sinner will take on fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in a blockbuster quarterfinal clash. The Russian ousted Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexandre Muller, and Jan-Lennard Struff, and received a walkover after Grigor Dimitrov retired mid-match.
This will be the 12th meeting between the two, with Medvedev edging the head-to-head 6-5. The Russian won the first six matches while the Italian won the previous five.
Provided that both of them win their matches, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will play each other in the semifinals.
