Stefanos Tsitsipas was asked who he thought was his biggest rival on the tour and the Greek named Carlos Alcaraz. Fans were amused by Tsitsipas' response and many cited their one-sided head-to-head record.
Tsitsipas is currently playing in the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad. The 25-year-old is playing in the ATP 250 clay court tournament in preparation for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
According to a tennis-related X account, Tsitsipas claimed that Alcaraz is his 'biggest rival' on tour.
Alcaraz and Tsitsipas have faced each other six times in their careers and the Spaniard has come out on top on each occasion. Citing this record, many fans claimed that it was a one-sided rivalry.
"This is not a rivalry. They kick our ass every time," one fan wrote.
"He is not in your league mate," another fan wrote.
"It's not a rivalry if you've never won a match against them..," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more reactions to Tsitsipas' statement:
"A more one sided rivalry than Serena Maria," one fan wrote.
"Basically anyone who knows to target his backhand," another fan wrote.
"This isn’t a rivalry it’s a beatdown bro," a third fan wrote.
A deeper look at Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas' rivalry on tour
Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas first faced each other in the 2021 US Open. The Spaniard was a teenager at the time but possessed the same determination. They played out a five-set battle in which Alcaraz even got bageled but managed to win 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2), 0-6, 7-6(5).
“Rafa Nadal had already spoken about him [Alcaraz] at the Laver Cup in 2019, and he wasn’t even in the Top 300 in the world,” Stefanos Tsitsipas had said, according to ATP.
“You already knew he’d be good, you could see it. At that time I was able to imagine that he might be a big rival of mine in the coming years, and my prediction was right.”
In 2022, they faced off twice. Alcaraz beat Tsitsipas in the Round of 16 stage of the ATP Masters 1000 Miami 7-5, 6-3 in March. Less than a month later, in April, the Spaniard prevailed over Tsitsipas in Barcelona in the quarterfinal 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Since then, in three more encounters, Alcaraz has not lost a set against the two-time Grand Slam finalist. In 2023, the Spaniard won 6-3, 6-4, in the final in Barcelona and 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinal of the French Open.
Their latest encounter was also a quarterfinal at the Paris Slam early in June. Carlos Alcaraz won that match 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4 and went on to win the title.
