Carlos Alcaraz recently shared his thoughts on the fast-rising Joao Fonseca following the latter's first-round victory over ninth seed Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open on Tuesday (January 14). The Spaniard praised the Brazilian's well-tempered attitude during such a marquee match while speaking positively of his future prospects.
Alcaraz, seeded third in Melbourne, has had a sublime campaign at the first Major tournament of the year thus far, winning his first two matches in straight sets to reach the third round. As the Spaniard focuses on his 'Career Grand Slam' aspirations, he was asked to express his views on one of his peers during a press conference on Wednesday.
Joao Fonseca announced himself on the Major stage in style, defeating ninth-seeded Andrey Rublev 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round of the Happy Slam. With his win, the 18-year-old became the first teenager to beat a top-10 player at a Grand Slam tournament since 2019.
Carlos Alcaraz expressed his views on the above feat by first showering rich praise on Fonseca's mentality. He also warned the tennis universe to look out for the teen phenom in the future.
"What can I say about it? Just incredible. I mean, the way he played his first Grand Slam match against his first top 10, it's unbelievable," Carlos Alcaraz said about Joao Fonseca (via Jose Morgado on X). "The way he approached the match, the way he handled everything, the nerves, the match in general, it's been fantastic. It's someone that I have to be careful of, let's say... He's going to be there."
"It is just the beginning of the year, just one win in Grand Slam, but he's going to be there. We're going to put João Fonseca's name on the list of the best players in the world really soon."
Joao Fonseca will take on Lorenzo Sonego for a place in the third round of Australian Open 2025
Playing in the main draw of a Major tournament for the first time in his career, Joao Fonseca has impressed fans with his performance at the 2025 Australian Open. The Brazilian, ranked 112th in the world, will face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in the second round. He leads the Italian by a margin of 1-0 in their head-to-head meetings on the ATP tour, having beaten him in the first round of the Tiriac Open in Bucharest last year.
Since Fonseca's ATP ranking was not in the vicinity of direct entry ahead of the Australian Open, he had to go through qualifying. The teenager made it to the main draw without much trouble, winning all three of his qualifying-round matches in straight sets.
